Do and don't in Senegal

Are you living in Senegal? We need you to share your experience of the local customs smile

Is it difficult to adjust to the local customs in Senegal?

Could you please share with us a list of the do's and don't's in Senegal?

Thanks!

Re: Do and don't in Senegal

DO jump right in learning the language and especially the greetings.
DO learn how to bargain fairly, cheating neither you nor the vendor.
DO travel outside of Dakar any chance you have. the countryside of Senegal is beautiful
DONT take taxis by yourself at night
DONT be drunk on the streets
DONT come to Senegal just to take, see what you can give as well
DO drink attaya
DO learn the local dances
DO relax in hammocks
DO fall in love

Re: Do and don't in Senegal

Our 24 yo daughter is a dental student in Boston and will be doing an eight week internship in Dakar. She needs safe and economical housing and all the helpful tips she can get. Welcome any suggestions. Thanks, NancyFlorida

Re: Do and don't in Senegal

Hi Nancy,

The best option is check if the dental college can arrange a hostel.
The other options are you will get serviced apartments. A single bedroom apartment cost around 300,000-400,000CFA.

Another option you can take a room in a 2/3 bedroom service apartment. In this case, the normal rate is 10000CFA per day which can be negotiated to 200,000-250,000CFA permonth. Here you have to share the  kitchen and living room with other members.

Re: Do and don't in Senegal

Sanil, So appreciate you sharing this information. What is a "service apartment"? I am not familiar with this phrase. Where would Ashley look to find options to rent in a service apartment? In a newspaper? Online? Thanks for your help, NancyFlorida
