Re: How to make friends in Paris

I've come up with a few useful sites on meeting people in paris that I put on my blog. I also like the idea of Pastas Party for singles to meetup on Sundays! I would totally try it if I were single!

Re: How to make friends in Paris

Hi guys, well I am a big fan of www.meetup.com , People organise loads of events each week and you just sign up and go along and hope you'll click. Sure its most expats but Ive actually met a number of French people so had to chat in my terrible French despite myself.

Mostly they are well run (though last nights organiser was 40 minutes late, but we that turned up bonded over giving out about him;) ) Id recommend The Paris Night life group the guy Michelle who runs it is excellent and makes sure to introduce you into the various groups of people:

Re: How to make friends in Paris

hey i know a great bunch of people at  POUR VOUS PARIS - pour-vous-paris.com/

they are all fluent in english and french and organise group outings to cafes and things, and are lots of fun. everyone is generally in the same boat, and sometimes there will be a person who you have something in common with.

Re: How to make friends in Paris

The meet ups and online sites are great for meeting other expats, there are all kinds of people there - really all kinds. Sometimes it can be overwhelming and some groups are more transient than others requiring some effort to find long-term friends (if you're only here on holidays, that may not matter anyway). Be patient to meet the right "matches" since the crowds are big.

Church/temple/mosque/other religious group - I do not go regularly, but on occasion I've been to some of the American churches here and they are quite active and full of people, not just from the US, but everywhere! They also host lots of social activities. I'm sure other denominations have similar groups.

National clubs - women's groups, chambers of commerce, alumni associations from various universities, for example I just googled "women's groups in Paris" and found this list: intransit-international.com/life_paris_women.html with every anglophone nationality represented and more! I'm a member of the American Women's Group and the Assoc. of American Wives of Europeans - if anyone falls into one of those categories and is interested in more info send me a message!

If you want to branch out and meet locals, I recommend joining a sports club/hobby class or volunteering. You do need to have an intermediate level of French or higher to begin, but you will definitely improve learning amongst native speakers who have the same interest as you.

francebenevolat.org and coordinationsud.org are great for finding volunteer opportunities ranging from prision visits to soup kitchens to supporting environmental projects to just visiting some elderly residents for a walk or chat (older people tend to speak very good French with proper grammar FYI if you want to work on your languge skills) You can volunteer for one day or over the long term. I highly recommend giving back to the community you live in, it not only helps you meet people, but improves the overall perception of foreigners as contributing residents.

The main thing is to get out there, attend events that interest you, and start chatting. Preferably go alone so as to avoid clinging to the buddy system and alienating all new people. Hope these suggestions help inspire a few people to brave the gloomy winter weather and get involved!

Re: How to make friends in Paris

I moved in Paris 4 years ago without knowing anybody (ok, i am french so no language issue).

In fact, i met friends thanks to music!
There are a lot of small bars in Paris where singers make free concerts.
the atmosphere is very nice and it is quite eays to met people:
try:

L'Aperock'café (46 bd voltaire - 75011 paris)
La Cave se Rebiffe
Le Café de Mars
Le Celtic Corner
Au chat noir
l'éléphant du nil
le bar du cirque
Le Palais bar
....

i wish you nice meetings

Re: How to make friends in Paris

I think a great way to meet people is through language exchange, we've got a page on our blog (language exchange) and from hearing the feedback, groups and well as individuals are got together from the details they've left on the page.
