Average salary and cost of living in malta

€ 10-15,000 is typical annual salary

That's quite a broad average - from what I've been reading on many blogs, expats are battling to get paid more than the minimum wage of approx 600 euro per month unless they are working in an environment where university qualifications are a prerequisite     or else working in IT. Any one else know?  I'd be quite happy to learn that my impression is wrong!

Salary will vary largely depending on your area of expertise. I've heard the average is between 10-15000 too. But in iGaming will be slightly more.

Cost of living- as a couple we probably spend around €200-€250 a month on groceries (could probably do it cheaper than that though)

Rent depends massively on where you want to be based can be from €300-€500 a month rent for a one bedroom place depending on location and furnishings. We rent a 2 bedroom place now for €450 but are moving more central to a €650 2 bedroom place soon.

The salary offered is 13.809 € for full-time and 15.668 € with a BSc qualification.

In regards to shopping- I thought we were spending quite a lot! There's only two of us so that will make a difference! We get our fruit & veg fresh from the people on the streets with the vans and carts.

Generally shop at lidl as they are really cheap and we've had no problems with quality. Other places we've tried are Scotts supermarket and Park Towers- both give you 6 x 2litre bottles of drink if you spend over 100 which is pretty good. Also in Park Towers the meat is cheaper if you buy it from the man behind the counter rather than already packaged. We stock up on chicken / mince / steaks / sausages and freeze it and just take it out when we need.

The "Times of Malta" today reports a Parliamentary answer on earnings.  It seems that about 64,000 people (ie - my sums - about 15% of the population) earn more than €15,000 (which is pretty much the average salary as quoted by George above).  Of those 64,000, about 40,000 earn up to €23,000.  So only about 6% of the population earn more than €23,000.

These figures seem to be based on tax return declarations.

UPDATE:  Small caveat - my comparisons to the population are to the entire population, not to the working population.  So the proportion of people who work who earn more than €23,000 will be greater than my 6% figure, though (this was the point, really) still not a whole lot of people.  Anybody who is sufficiently interested is welcome to take it from there!

Those are some interesting figures - though I think there is at least one mistake:

That's amazing!! Broken down..approx...you spend 8 euros a day for three meals for the both of you. I think I want to hire  you to be my personal shopper...lol. I really need to check out that store Lidl!!!

I've only ever used the one in Santa Venera- it's not huge but does for us! 8 euros a day for 3 meals for the both of us does sound pretty good haha. However of course it wont be exact as we eat out quite a bit, I only have 2 meals a day, I get free fruit somedays at work and Connah gets free lunch on Fridays which all helps keep the shopping down!

As long as people are happy to step away from the English/American brands they know and love then it can be really cheap. Look out for deals, go with the cheaper Italian versions (I often use google translate to work out how to make stuff!) wherever possible get stuff from the deli counter, I always find we get more for our money at the counter.

We always go once on payday and literally fill up a trolley load and only spend about 100-120 and even at Christmas where we bought extra things like big boxes of chocolate and cakes etc we only spent 150. This big shop usually lasts just over 2 weeks, sometimes 3, then we do another big shop for 100-120 which see's us through til payday I may well start documenting it a bit better and do a shopping guide on the blog lol

For fruit and veg check out the ta Qali market on Saturdays. Very fresh, top quality stuff all grown in Malta at prices about 20 percent cheaper than supermarkets. But its not so much about the price as it is about the quality.

My name is Julie, I am a nurse in the UK and have been offered a staff nurse position in Malta with a starting salary of 14,450 Euros annually,please could anyone advise me if this is a reasonable salary and does it equate to the cost of living, I will be relocating with my husband and children. That is about the average salary in Malta, and cost of living is dependant upon how you live.... for example if you go to restaurants every week then its going to work out quite expensive.

Depending on where you are looking to live also depends on the prices you will pay for apartments.

For example a 3 bedroom apartment in St Julians will cost in the region of €600.00 a month where as I have just got a place for a family member in Birzebbugia in the South, 3 bedroom, for €260 a month.

Is your husband going to work ???

Where are you staying in April and what dates are you here ??

Hi Julie,

Minimum wage in Malta is about €3.95 an hour. There are plenty of jobs available at the moment in Malta, but these are mainly seasonal.

Security work is available but i would suggest he looks at doing his security course in the UK, although there are training companies in Malta that charge about €80.00.

A lot of the vacancies that I have seen latley have been requesting Police checks... this is quite easy to get from the UK and you can get these from www.disclosurescotland.co.uk they cost about £25.00 just easier if its done before you come out as you have it all in place then.

Let me know where you are staying and have a good look around the Island, get out driving at 8 o'clock in the morning and at 5pm at night just to see what the traffic is like at those times in the day.  visit the south and the north, look at the price comparisons in these areas.

As I have mentioned before... I pay €1.50 for a LARGE cappucino in the South, where as in the more tourist areas you will be paying about €1.75 for a small one.

We are planning with my girlfriend to move to Malta from September. She is working in IT, I graduated and working in Hotel Industry. I had a look on different websites for jobs and how the life is in Malta. Obviously, it gave me a clue about the country but it's always better to hear infos from others. Do you think with our professions we can make reasonable money over there?

Although your job description is rather general both sectors (IT and hotels) should give you decently paid work for Maltese standards depending on the exact position you find.

Depending on what your expectations of 'reasonable money' are you should be ok.

Thanks for your answer. Yes, you're right. It was too general. She is a software developer with 3-4 years of experience and broad knowledge of software languages. Master degree from scotland. I am currently working in a 5star hotel in Edinburgh. (Front of house), ba(hon) degree on hospitality and marketing management. Also 2years marketing experience.

Hope the above description is a bit more deep as the previous. We just try to see both side of the things before we decide to move. Hear as many experience as it's possible.

well, you both have top qualifications geared to the well-paying end of the Maltese job market. You should both have no problem finding well paid jobs.

you will unfortunately find that most of the estate agents websites are out of date as they keep all properties on their sites whether they are let or not...ours for example is still on the website even now to this day and we have been in it for three years...!!!!

Aha, so i guess the only way to find an apartment is to phone the agencies...

No the classifieds in the times of malta is a good start - and once you are here there are lots of properties up for rent with just telephone numbers owners in windows - also by word of mouth ask around the bars cafes restaurants and shops if they know anyone with accom for rent....you may be surprised ..and the bonus is no fees to the agents

thanks, it's a good tip. Could you copy some websites where we could start looking for jobs as well. The situation is a bit same as with the flats. Many of the advertisements are out of date and 'timeofmalta' is perfect only for IT I'm looking for the something else. Every country has its own Gumtree or something like S1Jobs

Was wondering if I don't speak Maltese -English as first, Spanish as secondary language- can I find part time work just to cover bills/rent etc? I'm planning in living near the uni in Msida and have seen some pretty basic apartments for about 200/250pm plus I've heard you can negotiate if you sign a longer lease.
