Hi All!

I read the whole thread here but i couldn't find any info on the gyms in Buda side. I'm living close to Budaors also work there... Any info appreciated!

Thanks
G

You have a club in Budaörs, I've never been there but there's one. Otherwise the closes from you will be in the XI district, Vida fitness, GildaMax, Mega fitness...

There you go!

Thanks LuisAlberto,

Do you know the gym across the street from Mom Park shopping centre? I pass there alot and could go there. Any infos on the price, conditions, english speaking staff (not so important i can manage) ect..?

Cheers,
Gordon

English speaking staff?
Did you drink anything?
Hey, welcome to Hungary!

I saw the place, but since this area is a kind of snob place with snobish people I guess it's not for free...
But once again it depends of what you looking for, you wanna workout or "workout"...
See what I mean...

Im looking for a regural gym, used to train boxing before, so intend to work out, not pose :) maybe a gym where I could hang my suit because i'd go there straight from work...

Anyway I try to find something decent around that area...thanks for the info!

I know were there is gym/fitness where it costs 4000-6000 huf

Heya, have a new gym to review.

Bank Centre Fitness, which is near the Basilica in the 5th district. It's good for all of us who work in this area - you can pop there for lunchtime workouts. Not a perfect gym, but suits me.

My breakdown of it:

- New, spacious and spotlessly clean. Big cool group fitness rooms. Big changerooms. A nice change from WorldClass at the Marriot which is small and cramped in every way and was driving me crazy.

- Excellent classes, including spinning, kettlebell, pilates, fitball. Good schedule, and good options throughout the day before work, during lunch time and after work. Most trainers speak a little English and will make sure you're following. All the classes I've had have been great.

- Gym itself isn't the absolute best. Seem to have a decent free weights section, four treadmills, older style weights machines. Entirely a matter of whether this suits your purposes. To me, the classes are more important, but this won't suit everyone.

- You have to pay extra for towels and there is no water cooler, you have to refil your bottle from the taps in the bathrooms. A really weird oversight on their behalf, but for me not a dealbreaker, I guess.

- Comically angry receptionist, but ... whatever. :P

- Not so cheap. For me it was worth is just because it's so close to work and the classes are excellent. But the price is about the same as Holmes Place, depending on what package you get. Unlike Holmes Place, you can buy single or 10 passes here, so you can try it out and see if you like it.

Website with prices and timetable here: http://bcfitness.hu/en/

Hope people find this useful. It's a funny place - never seems to come up in any searches of gyms in Budapest, and none of my friends had ever heard of it, but I really like it!

good customer service, english speaking and good atmosphere, oh and affordable.

look for Amir and mention Marc gave this info:

Hey,

I'm looking for a gym, best value, and weights orientated. You were saying the one you go to is good value. Where I can I find this one or a similar one which is cheap and got the necessary equipment for a real workout?- luxury not needed

try to check training station near oktogon, in central Bp for it's price, location, atmosphere and equipment it's the best choices. If you get to speak with Amir tell him you got the link from me. cheers good luck on your search

trainingstation.co/

No fenced interest but go and stay in a Vadasz utca - I'll leve the rest to you and the googlemap API - new built apartment complex (short and long lets alike) and then you have a free gym with free weights, a treadmill, some girlie machinery and matts.
And a l6 kg kettlebell (even though it might not be your weight). These have made miracles to me erlier this Summer.
Good luck,

Dez

Hi knuttelmarc,

I suggest you to recommend this gym in the Budapest business directory.

Thank you,
Christine

Hi Im looking to purchase a used gym membership in the gozsdo holmes place.
If any body knows about one I will be happy to hear about. Thanks!

hi Margle

if you plan to stay longer you might want to consider the All You Can Move Sportpass

you might need to discuss this with some other colleagues at your workplace to get a corporate contract.

its practicly a pass what will provide you access to many fitness activites depending on the package you subscribe to allyoucanmove.hu/eng/?eng

but you need to have a loyalty of 1 year!

cheers,
tibi

sorry folks, i fooled myself not checking which year the question has been posted - but the above information might still be helpful :)

I am also looking for a gym in Budapest, one that has yoga classes taught in English, does anyone know of one?

I have seen one small class (4-5) at Vadasz 28 (earlier this year) yet, it's a tutor going there twice a week otherwise it's a residents only gym.
PM if you'd like to get the ins I can ask for details.

Hi - I join this a month at a time when I am over here. Good facilities including weights etc. Not 24 hours though.
life1wellness.hu/

Hi Everybody :) ,

I'm visiting Budapest next week and I' looking for any gym equipped with free weights and squat rack. I checked Gym City's website which was recomended by LuisAlberto to BGP and by pictures it looks fine.
So, BGP what are Your impressions? Anyone? I'd be very grateful for any opinion regards this facility...

I'm staying at Mária utca and I'd like to also ask (e.g LuisAlberto) if one could point anything like Gym City that would be located little bit closer to Maria street...?

Thanks in advance,

A.

What district is Maria street located?
Then I can tell you or advise you any place.

I belive Maria ucta is located in VIII-th district...

Oktogon Square in not to far using the public transportation.
You'll find the Traing Station, if you don't look for fancy luxury useless machines on nice carpets, you'll find a cheap gym with loads of foreigners. Free weights and barbells are the main equipment in there. Look at my profile's pic it talks by it self...

Thanks Luis!

Well, I don't use machines at all, just barbells and don't care about furnishment.
I'm loading on Pendelay 5x5 at the moment. It means that each training day I perform squats...and one to two days I might struggle with weigth that is why I really care about squat rack, preferably with spotters :) .

Sorry Luis if I'm beind a pain in the eye but what is the exact adress of the Gym at Oktogon Square? What training station are You thinking about? I can't google anything...
I just checked your profile and it says that you live in Budapest curently. Is it correct?

BTW, if the Guy on the picture from your profile is really You, It means that you are a Beast  :D !

The gym is located in the beginning of Aradi street near Oktogon. You'll find it on facebook. And yes it's me on the picture. And I'm currently 113kg.

Cheers Mate for your help.
I'll give this gym a try and visit it
Take care Luis  ;) .

Interesting to read up on gyms in Budapest.
I was a serious gym member for over 30 years, did it all at some point. Even took Jane Fonda classes in S. Calif  back in the day. Did step in the 80's when it first was introduced etc.
In 1986 while on vacation in Hungary and staying in small town Erd, I couldn't find any gyms.
I used to do aerobics near the chicken coop outside at my MIL's home.Had many of her neighbors looking through their curtains at the " crazy" American jumping around outside.
I was a die hard exercise freak, gym or no gym, nothing stopped my daily workouts.
I did happen to find several small but friendly group classes in Erd in the early 2000's.
After moving into Budapest I found a sweet little ladies only gym with good group classes located near the New York hotel.
It has closed down and was turned briefly into an overpriced yoga center.
That is long gone now as well, way too pricey for most people to use the club.
I was also a die hard yoga practioner for 16 years.
The Life fitness center looked like they were a close match for the 24/hour fitness centers like in the US.
The one I checked out was just behind the new mall near Corvin.
I never attended there though but it looked decent for under $100. a month. Over $75. more then I paid in the US for 24/hour fitness clubs.
I really am at a loss why the gyms are so over priced in Hungary, why can't they open with the same concept as in the states. A flat membership fee at a reasonable price.
These days post knee surgery (all that high impact finally got to me) I workout at our flat.
Elliptical machine, weights bands, tubes and bars along with a library full of varies workout routines.
I was even considering going online for the pay as you go classes.
I would be interested if anyone finds a decent gym in Budapest with group classes for a reasonable fee.
Nothing fancy, just good classes held in either English or Hungarian.
I am not too interested in Astoria clubs, too crowed and not exactly what I was looking for in a gym.
I found it easy to follow group classes in Hungarian although my language skills are poor. Once the music starts there is no problem doing the routines.

Hi there,

You are absolutely right!
The fitness clubs monthly fees in Budapest are ridiculous since you just take a look at the Hungarian monthly average salary.
I was a member of the Gym City since they opened last year.
In february 2014 the monthly membership went up to 14.000 HUF. It means 14% of the Hungarian average salary!
I have no problem to pay it, my salary largely allows is, but for me it's a question of principles, and I won't pay this amount.
When I was in California, at 24 hours fitness in Sherman oaks galleria I paid 20 USD/month and the service offered was a way much better quality, at least I had a smile from the receptionist every days!
Hungarians are hungry for money, and not really customer service oriented.
I was going the Gym City mostly in the afternoon around 2pm. Due to the monthly fee, no wonder why I saw there only females form the porn industry and let's say Hungarian "massage" girls.
It was like a breast implant and Botox convention! :))
Many Hungarian girls that I met told me I'd like to workout but I just can't afford the membership fee.
Logical, when you earn 100.000ft a month or less like many Hungarians, if you have to pay over 10.000ft a month a fitness club, most of the time these people haste other priorities like utility bills and etc...
Pretty sad!

I agree with you 100%.
Prices should reflect the average workers salary, not cater to the wealthy classes only.
My husband escaped Hungary back in 71 due to it's ridged class system( communist member verse non member, now it's those with $ and those just getting by).
In the states he is willing to pay the prices asked for if need be but when in HU he looks at the average workers wages and prices before he buys anything.
He is retired from working in the US but still HU and it's average people are close to his heart. He will not let the material system rule the way he spends his hard won SS and supports the working class with his pocket book whenever possible.
I also worked out at 24 hour fitness in Sherman Oaks, Calif. loved it!
In Las Vegas I was able to be a member in good standing with 2 clubs for less then $35. a month! 24/hour fitness was only $12. a month for me and Las Vegas Athletic Club was $21. a month! Great classes all day long with friendly staff. We had instructors that were former NYC dancers on Broadway, ex show girls and circus performers, yoga, kick boxing, all included in the low monthly membership fee.
We had our share of porno people as members, dancers etc. but basically no one cared no big attitudes, just everyone sweating up a storm in the well equipped  club.
State of the art gyms at low rates and never too over crowded because most people do not go everyday to the gym if the fees are low.
The gyms still make a profit because most people don't bother working out daily if they know they are not breaking the bank to attend.
I refuse to pay more for less service so for now I will have to keep working out at home.

I will bump us this thread, as I would like to find a gym the same as the person above me, just a basic place with free weights. I hate anything glamorous or with fitness machines! I live in the XIII district.

Also, does anyone know where you can buy barbells to work with at home?

hi there,

for barbells i would go to decathlon, but as you mentioned 13. district, i did some research. i have no experience with the shop but it may be close to you: 1139 Budapest, Forgách utca 19. http://shop.builder.hu/budapesti-uzletunk-a1224
i guess the best if you order and go to pick it up.

as for working with weights, again 13. district: https://www.facebook.com/atlantisz.ATTE/
daily is 700 HUF monthly is 6200 HUF - i dont have experience here either, but most likely this is what you need.

and coming back to my post some longer time ago. if any of you are working at some companies with headcounts 25+, it would be worthwile to ask HR if they have a contract with the unlimited sports cards, what is a yearly subscription and really nicely priced.

there are two i am aware of: http://www.allyoucanmove.hu/ -- All you can move sportpass  and
http://www.sportkartya.eu  --- Sportkartya

cheers,

I feel exactly the same way, (Sherman Oaks Mall in  S, Cal. brings back memories of good times!!)
Yes I was a serious workout rat , used to go to the Jane Fonda classes On Ventura Blvd, back in the day, have been doing everything from jumping jacks in all women fitness classes in the early 80's to working out with yoga, step, you name it I tried it.
Love working out, now at age 60 with 2 blown out knees, I am still working out but do my own thing at home here in Budapest.
I refuse to pay for boring classes that are so snobby and serious here often taking longer to get ready and get to the club then just doing it at home.
In Las Vegas, I was going to 2 different health clubs all over the city since each club had many locations everywhere. Last trip to Vegas I noticed many $10. a month clubs inside strip malls, figure they are that cheap because they have no pool.
Friends live near the Oxygen health center in Buda, they went in to ask the price, $250. a month per head!!! Sorry, it can't be all that nice, where is the valet parking at those prices!!!
LVAC in Vegas was only $20 a month and 24 Hour Fitness with my long term plan was only $12. a month!
I refuse to pay more then that here in Hungary to use old equipment in a smelly room, anything nicer is too much over here.
After over 30 years of at least 6 days a week going to a quality gym everywhere from Calif, Hawaii and Las Vegas, I am sort of put out here in HU with what you get for your $$. I find I have good workout habits from so many years of following the leader that I enjoy working out at home in my own time with my own music.
At my age I can just imagine going to a club in Hungary with all the Botox girls, too weird for me...
Funny though in Vegas most of the instructors were ex show girls and dancers but down to earth and ready to help out with a smile.

good day Marilyn,
the one i just posted with the facebook link is about 23 USD :)  I hope we are getting closer... :D (still not a 12 dollar with long term) but you get exactly what you see on the photos there.
cheers

Yes, it's the gym thread again!

Can anyone recommend a cheap, more "men's type" gym with free weights, rather than machines, in the IX district? I live next to the Museum of Applied Arts, so I am in the "inner city" (Belváros) part of Ferencváros, just at the intersection with the VIII district (studenty part), so VIII district would also do...

I have just moved into this district, but although I have walked around, I have yet to encounter a gym.
