Religion in schools (primary and secondary)

Hi, I was also wondering are all of the state schools Catholic? Can pupils opt out from RE? Coming from Ireland where there are 0 non-denominational schools so the kids would be used to schools with 'Catholic Ethos' but they don't have to actively participate in religious education here (they are given some more maths or English jobs to do independently whildt the other children do the RE).

Thank you again for any replies.

I don't know is it the same in all gov schools, but my son goes to st. claire college and they asked me do I want hi mto listen religion or no

so it is not mandatory

We were given the option with my 8 and 5 year old in a state school to either do religion or ethics. Although we are not a religious family my kids decided they wanted to take religion. They are very religion driven in state schools so it seems but not suprising as we do live in a generally religious country, But the option to opt out is definitely there
