Working as a freelancer in Denmark

Hi,

A lot of expats dream of becoming self-employed: we would like to help you to make that dream come true.

Can foreigners work as self-employed in Denmark? What are the formalities to work as a freelancer?

What are the pros and cons of this status: social security, tax system, etc.?

How is the freelance market in Denmark?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience,

Kenjee

Hi,

Looking for a job in Kolding, Denmark.
Anyone in the same boat?

Foreigners shall basicly work as employees.

As an expat you cannot work as a free-lancer in Denmark. However, you can start your own business if there is particular Danish professional or labour market interests in the establishment of the company in Denmark, but your business idea must be approved by a panel of experts appointed by the Danish Business Authority.

Hi Nellie!

Can you confirm if this is still the case, I'm having trouble finding the right information online.
We are moving to Denmark 1 June. I am currently full-time employed in The Netherlands, however my current employer would like me to keep working for them as a Freelancer from 1 July.
My employer sits in Madrid, so I'll be sending my monthly invoices there. It will be paid to my danish bank account and being registered in Denmark then, I will be paying my taxes for the income there.
However - I am trying to find out how to go about this:

* how do I register myself as a freelancer in order to get a tax number and being able to send invoices to danish clients, but for now mainly EU clients ?

* how much taxes do I pay in freelance income?

Can you at all help me with these questions?

Best
Nicki

Hi Nicki

My answers to you are absolutely to be confirmed by people in charge. I am on thin ice regarding all this. Do cheque my information! I have always been an employee myself and neither tried to be an expat.

As an EU-citizen you'll be allowed to work as a freelancer in Denmark.
If your income surmounts 50,000 kroner, you shall register for VAT (Voluntary to do so below this amount). I guess because some branches don't have to.
I found this site (in Danish) where a panel of accountants will answer questions within 24 hours - for free. Try!

You'll find a tax dictionary here:

As a freelancer, you are going to have a company number, a CVR number.

You can register your company on this site.

The tax will be the same for a freelancer (self-employed) as for an employee, but as a freelancer, you shall not have a personal taxcard. At the end of the year, you'll have to declare your net income, and you'll get to know the tax amount which you have to pay.

If we take that you are single, live in Gladsaxe municipality, have a yearly income of 100,000 kroner, 200,000 kroner or 300,000 kr., the tax will respectively amount to 22,144 kroner, 60,780 kroner or 99,415 kroner. Just to give you an idea of what we are talking about.

Statsforvaltningen is the authority in charge of EU residencies:

Maybe, this centre will be the very first to see and talk to:

Thanks so much Nellie, this is great. And I got some helpful info from SKAT also earlier today.
