Volunteering in Spain

Hi,

While living abroad, some expats wish to get involved in the local community life.

What organizations expats can turn to if they want to volunteer in Spain?

How to join a charitable institution, what are the steps?

Which causes have the greatest need for volunteers in Spain?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and advice,

Maximilien

Good question. I would love to know of any groups charitable or cultural which I could join. I need Spanish speaking though, not Catalan (although I'm in Cataluna)

I too have been searching. Had difficulty with sites Charity Vault and Red Cross.
I am in Valencia, Nou Campanar, speak English and sufficient castellano.  Thanks! Roz Flans

I would love to volunteer in the "up keep" of historical buildings. I have seen so many beautiful sites where it has been left to rot due to no funds. As an Anthropologist, this is something I would greatly be interested in. Unfortunately, as I have asked a number of owners and letters to councils if this can be arranged, they are not willing to accept any free help and nothing more is said. Shame to see history crumbling, but this is an area I would very much like to take part in.

HI,  there are lots of organisations in need of volunteers.   where abouts are you in spain.
or are you looking to relocate

Hi, Pagano, very interesting, I love very old buildings or ruins.
I am an "Old School" Dutch architectural technologist, but most important, I am a master wood worker, studied old wood framed building constructions, and old buildings way back.
I would like to assist you in your effort to preserve, restore for further generations to come.

I don´t want to publish my email address like most popular ones like gmail. hotmail etc. , though, I have an untraceble unlinked one, guaranteeing my privacy.

Pleased to meet you and hear how we can get some project(s) going.

Hi everybody,

Can we please discuss in english on this english speaking forum?

Thanks,

Priscilla

Actually, Ros apologized for writing in Spanish.
I did not understand enough of what she wrote, so asked for more info.
I wrote her in Spanish because I didn't think she'd understand English.
Hope she has a friend who can translate for her.
Roz

You could always try here....

Not sure knocking cats on the head is my thing but someone may be up to it. :D

Dear Ros,
Did you get the message I sent in Spanish?
Quería más información. Cuales museos? Gracias.

Hi yes, I got it. Unfortunately I had just put 'volunteering in Spain' into the search engine and that is what it came up with.
I can't find it now. But the name of the org was in the text / something like CIS I think, from memory. You could try looking that way. I'll let you know if I find it!
...... I had another look and suspect that this was volunteering at Vilanova I la Geltru Railway Museu. However there is a form you can fill in  to express interest in working with your nearest Museum

I am writing in English, because I am English but feel that I should be able to quote a bit of a spanish website without having to translate it!!

Hi Jack. Apart from the information I have posted elsewhere about the railway museum I would get in touch with your nearest Museum. I bet they would welcome you with open arms!
Ros

Seventeen years ago, I started a team of volunteers working 4 hours a day at our National Police Station.   Within a few months, the police chiefs at four other nearby Guardia and National police stations asked me to set up teams for them too.   I ran the five teams for about 8 years until I remarried and did not have so much free time.  I still work four hours a week for the National Police, translating mainly for people making crime reports and occasionally for those seeking paperwork for residence, NIE etc.

Since the introduction of the 902 102 112 facility for giving information about certain, but not all crimes (crimes involving fraud, violence etc. can only be reported in person) and then going to a National Police Station to make and sign the report, there has been less need.  Note, if not signed then no report exists. However, the information sent to the National Police following the telephone calls quiet often need correcting before the victim should sign, as maybe indistinct accents are misunderstood on the phone.   In addition, a friendly face and English voice consoles losers and provides a valuable personal service.  People often leave with their report in a happier frame of mind, ready to continue their holiday instead of it being ruined.

Such voluntary service is important in all tourist areas.

One does not need to be fluent as the vocabulary required is fairly limited and can easily be acquired on-the-job.
