Volunteering in Cuba

Hi,

While living abroad, some expats wish to get involved in the local community life.

What organizations expats can turn to if they want to volunteer in Cuba?

How to join a charitable institution, what are the steps?

Which causes have the greatest need for volunteers in Cuba?

Thank you in advance for sharing your experience and advice,

Maximilien

Volunteering in Cuba is a unique experience, especially if you go through your local or national Cuba friendship association. The ICAP [Instituto Cubano de Amistad con Peublo] is a federation of friendship organisations from across the world, which is based in Havana. Their volunteering program involve a series of community activities,
thus enabling you to experience true life in Cuba. You will develop a deeper understanding  of their education
system, their national health service and you will gain a greater insight into their innovative agricultural system, after your work experiences.
As I mentioned, volunteering in Cuba will be unique experience as it a society not like any other in the world. The
emphasis is on the common good of the whole rather than the individual. It is not an individualist country like our own
or like the US. Due to the economic blockade of Cuba by the US, which has lasted for over 54 years, the Cubans
have suffered dreadful hardships over the years. They have difficulty importing food from abroad as the US punishes any country that trade with Cuba. However, a volunteer would not fail to notice and admire the resilience of the Cuban people.
