Re: Cost of living in Niger
In general, it is expensive to live a Western-style lifestyle in Niger. I believe most agencies give their foreign staff in Niger a cost-of-living adjustment that is often close to 25% of their salary. This is somewhat dependent on the currency they work with and its value to the West African CFA (which is linked to the euro). In particular, eating like a Westerner is very expensive as most of the foods Westerners like have to be imported, since Niger has very little food processing industries. In reality, grocery prices tend to be consistent with European stores, although they are much higher than most Americans are used to paying. However, eating at a restaurant in the capital is surprisingly affordable, as a very good meal can be found for $10-$20.
A big exception to the general high costs of living well in Niger is housing. In the capital city, large 3-4 bedroom homes can be found for US$5-600/month in rent (and even less in the interior). Homes with swimming pools can be found for not too much more. Of course this varies with neighborhood and the age of the home, but housing can be a real value, particularly if you came from a small, expensive apartment in a major city or you are used to spending a third of your income on your lodging. It would be advised for most Westerners to engage a guard or a guardian service, as your home will almost certainly be a target for theft if it is not guarded. Depending on your arrangement, this may cost as little as $100/month for a night-only guard that you employ yourself or several hundred dollars/month if you need round-the-clock protection from a security service.
