Want to donate to a Vietnamese charity but are unsure who or how?

Hi guys,

I often meet expats that want to give something back to the local community but are unsure how.  I have been doing some volunteering with Saigon Children's Charity, and have seen, first hand, the amazing work they do in helping disadvantaged children in Vietnam get an education.

Have a look at their latest campaign and if you can spare $10, it's a huge help to the charity!

Have a good day!

Hi Rob29, you can contact Mr. Kenneth Rae, he has worked for charity in Vietnam since 1996 and he is from Scotland. You can find his email as per below:-
[email protected]

Clara he is not looking for a charity, he was giving some info about one.

Hello there Rob29,

It is a very good initiative indeed  :) You should also post an advert in the Clubs, associations, volunteers in Saigon section of the website and update it whenever there is a new campaign so as members can easily find it.

Cheers,  ;)

I think an idea could be that english teachers do one hour teaching voluntarily (to kids who cannot afford to go to language schools) for every two hours they do that is paid.  I know of some teachers that do some voluntary teaching. Seems a good way of 'giving something back'.

Hi, How do I know if the children are actually receiving the benefit from my donations?  I want to donate but is worry that it's a scam.

Hi,

Yeah,  I was on the same boat when I was decided what charity to volunteer for.  I really appreciate your concern.  If you lived in Vietnam,  it'll be much easier and I would of invited you to visit the office and see the work that they do.

So,  things that settled my concerns were that it is a UK based charity and with that being said,  it has to satisfy a certain number of criteria.  Potentially most important would be transparency and seeing exactly where the money goes.  With that in mind I'll  direct you to the link below which has a full financial reporrs over the last couple of years or so.

If the particular website I posted is something you are not at ease with,  you can always donate directly through their bank details   just mention 'bicycle'  in your reference, otherwise it will be considered as a general donation.   http://www.saigonchildren.com/our-bank-details.aspx

As an update,   we can now afford 54/87 bicycles.  We are also going to have company,  as part of a team building exercise,  helping build us some more this week.  So getting closer.... Slowly...

Feel free to follow the charity of Facebook and Twitter  @saigonchildren and see the event in action.

If you have any specific questions,  let me know.  I hope this helps.

Is this a registered NGO?
Could I have their overseas head office address and email please?
Also, being a registered NGO,can you give me their address in Viet Nam?
I'd love to help.

Hi Rob,
If you need any help, just like you need a volunteer, I am in.
I used to be a journalist, I can speak English and I love doing something, as you said: give something back, so, if you need a hand, I am yours.

Just followed your Twiiter

I live in Sài Gòn, D3

Do you know anything about this orphanage: Nhóm Thiện nguyện Tuổi Trẻ Từ Tâm ?  It is in Ho Chi Minh & I would like to send $ to this place.  Is there any chance you can check the place out for me?

Hello guys,

Thanks for all the interest in SCC and helping Vietnamese kids in general.  I'm happy to help.

Firstly, here is some information regarding the NGO registration number and their addresses both internationally and in Vietnam.

http://www.saigonchildren.com/scc-essentials.aspxhttp://www.saigonchildren.com/contact-us.aspx

Next, SCC is always looking for volunteers, if you look at this page you can registered your details and they will get in contact with you when their next event is on.  http://www.saigonchildren.com/volunteer.aspx

Lastly, with regarding to Nhóm Thiện nguyện Tuổi Trẻ Từ Tâm orhphange.  I am not aware of that particular orphange myself.  However, my advice would be to give items rather than money to these institutions, then you can be sure on where your money is going.  I tend to visit a place with my vietnamese friend and we ask the owner what they really need.  As you can imagine, it's usually nappies (diapers) or cleaning products, but sometimes clothes and reading materials.   I appreciate that you are not in the country but my maybe you have a friend who is based in Vietnam who can assist you?  Currently, I'm quite busy juggling SCC around my work but I am planning on visiting an orphange when I next get paid.  If I head there, I'll let you know :)

Thanks for following SCC on twitter!
