Safety in Germany

i fear 4 safety here. evil eyes and dull minds wishing and waiting for vulnerability of the weak and minor.

In big cities like Berlin, people are afraid to walk alone late night but in small cities its no problem. Probably this is because of large number of foreigners and refugees in big cities. As far as my experience is concerned, Germans are very honest, polite and calm

I lived in Freiburg for a month and I never felt intimidated walking around in the centre of town or walking out in the suburbs towards my homestay. Of course Freiburg is probably the least initimidating city in Germany, full of young, friendly students.

I also lived in Berlin for 2 years and there was of course a very different feeling there. I lived in a few different districts starting in Spandau in the far west. I felt mostly safe there but I would sometimes become a bit nervous if I'd arrived home late from work and I had to walk home in the dark.

My next district was Wedding and I admit I did feel quite initimidated in this area. It didn't help that the streets were full of little casinos and betting shops and the people who hung around outside were drunks and usually yelling obscenities. I learned to avoid walking down certain streets. Going into the Ubahn at certain hours could be frightening because of the types of people who were in there but most of the time I felt safe because there were a lot of other people around.

Once I moved to Prenzlauerberg I didn't have any problem with walking down the streets at any hour of the day and I always felt safe in that district. People were always obliging to stop and help with directions if I asked, no matter what time of day. I would quite often walk home from Alexanderplatz late at night without any worries.

I feel much safer in Germany than I did in the United States (I've lived in Oklahoma City, Dallas, Seattle and Boston). I think, in general, people are much less aggressive here. I live in Heidelberg and have had visitors in their late teens go out clubbing and come home (by train) at 4:00 with no problems. All cities have areas where you should be careful and crime certainly occurs; however, I consider Germany an unusually safe place.

Personally, I feel fairly safe in Germany. I reside in a place near Hamburg for about a year now and so far there were no security breaches that I have witnessed whatsoever. My kids go to school freely, daytime activities take place without any disturbances.

As long as nightlife is concerned I am not the best person to comment as I do not frequently go out at night due to family affairs and other commitments.

It is worth noting that I am a Macedonian diplomat so an example of a non-EU resident.

I have been in Germany for ten years and have lived in Darmstadt and Hameln .
I have walked day, late night and early morning from clubs and shops.

I have never been bothered or have I seen a fight.

I or my friends have never be robbed or had any bad experience .

I considered the areas I lived to be completely safe.
I hope that is of some interest.

I have never felt unsafe in Berlin or been threatened at any time day or night.

I have always felt safe in Germany, day or night, walking or driving. At the same time, I use common sense. I try to always be aware of my surroundings and avoid areas where demonstrations are occurring.

Funny topic since Germany is one of the safest countries in the world. To be randomly attacked or robbed, especially with a weapon is extremely rare. And outside of Berlin and Hamburg I don't think there are any neighborhoods where one must avoid. That said, one can find trouble anywhere if you look for it and provoke people. There is a small radical right-wing extremist factor which makes a lot of noise. They are now targeting homes for asylum seekers which cannot be ignored. As an immigrant to Germany, one needs to blend in which means learning the language and avoiding behavior that make you stand out. One does not need to scurry around in fear but keeping a low profile is always recommendable. Hanging around biker bars and rowdy clubs in the early hours and drunkenly shouting around that you can kick anybody's ass is going to create trouble. And if an altercation starts one's opponents might very well pick up that one is a foreigner and try to exploit that – although it might not have been an initial factor. Obviously, someone with dark skin is more likely to get targeted by a racist. If so, presenting that you are a reasonable person and polite will at least make any bystanders if not the trouble-makers themselves have respect for you. Trying to out-insult an aggressor will make things escalate and put off people who might otherwise intervene to help or at least call the police. So Germany is not 100% safe but compared to what?
