How Safe Is Quito From Cotopaxi?

Ecuador's Geological Institute is maintaining Cotopaxi's alert-level at yellow, one step lower than the current level (orange) at the other recently-active volcanoes, Tungurahua and Reventador.  Red is the highest level and would signify serious danger to populated areas.

Cotopaxi's volcanic activity has been moderate for the last two months with constant expulsion of gas, steam and ash from the crater.

Cotopaxi National Park will re-open in a few days, according to a report on the welcome page at www.cuencahighlife.com

The report was posted yesterday -- December 10, 2015.  It did not state an exact date of re-opening.

The parque has been closed for months since last summer's increase in seismic activity inside the Cotopaxi volcano.

Internal pressure at the Cotopaxi volcano is continuing to grow, notwithstanding the government's recent decision to re-open Cotopaxi National Park, according to the head of EC's Geophysical Institute.

A Quito newspaper reports that the decision to re-open the park was made under pressure from tourism officials.  Some geologists at the Geophysical Institute opposed the re-opening on safety grounds, according to the newspaper report.

The government says the portions of the park that are re-opening are outside the high-risk zone, and nobody will be allowed to climb the volcano.

February 26, 2016, update:

In recent weeks, Cotopaxi volcano has been rumbling back to life.

According to government volcanologist Patricia Mothes, quoted in El Comercio newspaper, there have been one to three daily explosions inside the volcano and 50 to 60 small earthquakes per day inside it.
