Yes, it was today in 1946 that the USA finally granted the Philippines independence 48 years after the Spanish were defeated. Other than renaming some streets in Manila, Filipinos have been very accepting of their relationship with the USA since 1898. They show amazing forgiveness and friendship after at least 270,000 Filipinose died fighting for independence from the USA from 1899 to 1907.

The Filipino-American Friendship Day, July 4, is a day in the Philippines designated by President Fidel V. Ramos to commemorate the liberation of the country by joint Filipino and American forces from the Japanese occupation at the end of World War II.

From 1946 to 1964, the 4th July was the Philippine Independence Day holiday.
However, in 1964 President Diosdado Macapagal, changed the Independence Day to 12 June.
It would appear sensibly trying to forget the older Philippine-American problem after Spain.
Maybe back in 1899 (116 years ago) both sides had fault back then:
[February 4, 1899, President Aguinaldo issued a proclamation ordering and commanding that "peace and friendly relations with the Americans be broken and that the latter be treated as enemies, within the limits prescribed by the laws of war."]
Over a million Filipinos died as a cause of the Japanese takeover in 1941 (74 years ago), yet friendly relations are seen here too.
The Philippines-Japan Friendship Month is held in the Philippines during the month of July.
2015 is the 37th Philippines-Japan Friendship Celebration year.
Most wars seem to be forgotten quite soon...
