The islands off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia and western Sabah (avoid eastern due to the kidnappings) are beautiful, as are the rain forests. It depends what interests you. Georgetown, Penang for various cultural offerings (UNESCO). Small but sweet is Malacca (UNESCO) which again has temples and buildings from various ages and cultures. Taiping - to visit a hill station that is unspoilt and the small lake gardens.

Depends on your interests and your objectives of travelling to Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur will be a shopping paradise for all. Sarawak highly recommended for someone who loves to explore other ppl's culture and beliefs. Another serene island will be Langkawi... And rich with history too.
