Looking for a new career in KL

Hi all
I'm am relocating to KL with my wife in August. She has secured employment already with a school (nexus)
I however need to find a job asap preferably before I arrive in KL.

Who are the best recruitment agents to speak to? Has anyone had any success with any specific individual agent?

I have made a handful of applications direct to some of the big multi nationals already but want to be proactive and hope to make contact with a (or a number of) active recruitment agents on the ground in KL. if they specialise in expats that would be great but clearly not essential.

Alternatively if anyone has any advice on the best methods to find employment in KL it would be greatly appreciated

Thanks in advance

hi James,

May I know what's your profession and your nationality please. Thanks.

Hi

I am currently head of operations at a central London real estate/property company.

My background is largely property related but The skills in my current role are highly transferable as I oversee a vide spectrum of our business activities from I.T, human resources and marketing. On the whole my role focussed on project managent across various parts of the business.
Are you aware of any opportunities that might be suitable?

Thank you for your prompt reply. I have a personal contact who is in Real Estate industry but his company is in Singapore..

Hi Eva,
Do u know some companies who hires filipino / tagalog speaker?
Ive searched through jobstreet. Feedback so snail. Almost 6 months had passed.

Please revert soon.

Thanks.

The basic fact of life is that Malaysia is a small country with 25 million and expatriate workers are expected to be highly skilled experts who add something to Malaysia. Phillipines, Vietnam, Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Bangledesh etc are much larger, poorer and in some cases failed states where people want to run away as large scale unemployment / poor opportunities.

There are (I am told) 4 million foreign workers but wages are min wage eg 1,000 RM per month (eg hotel work) and is hard work (many are illegal). Some might get a little more if semi-skilled. Attractive young women especially are vulnerable to "great offers" and end up in brothels - USA rates Malaysia as one of the world's hot spots for human trafficking.

A few do get worthwhile jobs - I have  a friend who is young under 27 Vietnamese who got a decent job (7k RM per month) but she got that networking hard overseas and sent to Malaysia. And she is very clever and pushy..

It is possible but jobstreet etc are a complete waste of time and is for locals only. If you have to ask how to get a job, in my experience you lack the contacts, skill and drive to get an expat job in Malaysia. Low paid foreign worker type work isn't recommended but for someone with no job back home it is better than nothing as long as the job is legit. Young women have to be especially careful as hotel jobs sometimes turn into "flat on their backs" type of work (!) so be careful.

For those who are serious the best way of getting work is to build up a proper career first. A Business Studies degree/MBA are two a penny and mean nothing for working overseas (and indeed anywhere really). To be honest I always advise youngsters to avoid such waste of time (and debt) degrees and do something else these days (work first and get experience - do a part-time degree and avoid debt). MBAs from INSTEAD or Harvard are worth something; otherwise what is the point. What counts is hard experience of at least 6 years in an expat friendly career (eg distribution). ITC is easier if younger but pay rates are very low in Malaysia.

Hi,

I am glad I found a blog for expats here, I find this very helpful. I am Joerebie, female from Philippines, new joiner. I love to stay in Kuala Lumpur with my fiancee whose working in I.T company, but unfortunately I can only avail the tourist pass since we are not married yet. I decided to find a career opportunity so that I can stay with him. Is there somebody here can help me find a company to work with? I am a degree of Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with 4 years administration work experience, I will be in Kuala Lumpur by August 20, 2015.

Hi admin jobs pay 1500 to 2500 at best so you cannot get a work permit.

My advice......

Get married !!!!!!
