Need your views

Hello everyone!

First of all this forum is a great help, well done to all the moderators and users for such great information. For an introduction, I am an Engineer based in Qatar working in Oil & Gas construction industry. Recently moved to Pakistan after completion of my job and now am being offered a job in Muscat, Oman in a relevant organization.

Now from the data gathered so far from various threads, I am just trying to sum up the numbers here. I need your experience to confirm or advise the following.

1. Salary offered with family status is around 2500 OMR (lumpsum) with all benefits included. Except for medical insurance and tickets which is covered by company. It seems to be reasonable, your thoughts?

2. Office is in Ruwi area. What is the rent per month for 2 BHK furnished in Ruwi area? It seems to be around 350 to 400 OMR. Please correct if range is not correct.

3. I look forward to admission of my kids in Beaconhouse / Choueifat. What is the average fee expected per child per month. Have no clue about this.

4. Company is providing a maintained car with fuel. It saves me around 150 + 50 OMR per month?

5. Cost of Food, entertainment, communication, internet, etc for a family of four. My guess 350 OMR.

6. Any other useful information regarding monthly budget that you think is worth mentioning, which i have not considered above.

You views shall be really helpful for me to make a decision. Thanks in advance.

Hi Deadman, (so, are you writing from beyond the grave ?!?)

Since your queries are many, I will post my comments against each individually :

It seems to be reasonable, your thoughts? - Whether the salary offered is reasonable or not can be assessed only after knowing the job / position, the level, your educational qualifications, number of years past work experience, employment track-record, industry of employment, specialisation, if any, et al. To cut to the chase, the sum offered is quite reasonable to live in Muscat, and pretty good elsewhere within Oman.

2. Office is in Ruwi area. What is the rent per month for 2 BHK furnished in Ruwi area? It seems to be around 350 to 400 OMR. Please correct if range is not correct. - Flats are available for even lesser, but the quality of the place would be a compromise too. Similarly, for more than R.O. 400/- per month rent places are available too offering better amenities, location and facilities.

3. I look forward to admission of my kids in Beaconhouse / Choueifat. What is the average fee expected per child per month. Have no clue about this. - Am not sure on this one.

4. Company is providing a maintained car with fuel. It saves me around 150 + 50 OMR per month? - Correct. You can also add the car's insurance cost as a saving.

5. Cost of Food, entertainment, communication, internet, etc for a family of four. My guess 350 OMR. - Could be more. But this is a purely personal decision, depending on how tight-fisted you are or a spendthrift !

6. Any other useful information regarding monthly budget that you think is worth mentioning, which i have not considered above. - Oh well, there could be many more. Reading the forum's cost-of-living topic (again) might throw more light.

You views shall be really helpful for me to make a decision. Thanks in advance.

Hi iamalvina2,

I resisted my urge to respond to your many previous posts inquiring about hospitals / clinics / best doctors / et al.

If you are looking for 'good hospitals' and 'experienced doctors' here in Muscat, you are barking up the wrong tree.

For anything more serious than cold, cough and flu you should look for treatment elsewhere. For any serious complaints you must head straight to India.

I have absolutely no reservations or the slightest hesitation in condemning the poor quality medical facilities and largely inept doctors to be found in all these private, money-spinning polyclinics.

I have paid an extremely heavy price because of the apathetic carelessness of Badr Al Samaa in Ruwi. I would list them right on top of the list of the worst health care providers in Oman.

Perhaps there are a handful of doctors who may be good. But I do not know of any such breed.
