I dont see people fighting to go to south America, is life that bad in those areas?

It depends where in South America you are going, but the standard of living is very different in South America compared to what US citizens are used to.  Also, many South American countries have political turmoil going on right now.

If you're looking to move there, I would suggest researching individual countries, as each one can be quite different.  Try talking to some members on this site who have lived in the countries for more advice.

The city of Cuenca in Ecuador is said to be the cheapest place in the world to live well. Including climate, culture (eg opera), healthcare, rents, food, domestic servants and so on.
But it is essential to learn Spanish and impossible to earn a living at Ecuador prices. So it is really only for retired people.
