Graduate work

Hi everyone,

At the end of this year I will complete my double bachelor degree of environmental science and environmental engineering.  Early next year I would like to move to Germany with my German partner.  I am just wondering what are the job prospects like for a recent graduate with limited experience? Do you think if would be possible to secure a job before leaving Australia? Is there a list of environmental engineering companies that operate in Germany that I can contact? I have very limited German language skills but are trying to improve.

Thanks

Hi vargtimmen,

There are  quite a few search engines where you can check out the job situation, e.g . Stepstone.de or simplyhired.de, monster.de...
Limited German language skills are a big issue and I definitely would start working on those. The overall situation for graduates with engineering degrees is not bad at all, but it depends on your flexibility in terms of location. Are you specialised in a certain field?  Do you have an area you are really interested in? I would definitely apply for jobs before leaving, the hiring process can take some time (min. 6 month, but it can vary, of course).
Here a link to the Gewerbeverzeichnis (business directory) for companies in Umwelttechnik (environmental technology):

You should also be aware that, as a non-EU citizen, it is quite difficult to get a work permit. Do you have skills and/or experience in a field with a shortage of manpower in Germany? What would convince a potential employer to hire you and not a similarly educated EU national (who must be preferentially hired, by law)? It might be very difficult for a fresh graduate to answer these questions.
However, if you marry your German partner (and then go through a few bureaucratic hoops), you can get a residency visa and work permit (unrestricted access to the German job market) and thus have much better chances.

Thanks for the replies.  You have given me a few things to think about whilst I finish my studies to place me in a better situation to move to Germany.  I'm thinking: I'll improve my German in the meantime and possibly stay in Australia for a few years to build up my experience.  Thanks again
