Obgyn in Nairobi

Hi,

I am trying to find a good obgyn in Nairobi. My husband and I just found out that I am pregnant and this is our first baby. I will be giving birth back home in the US but wanted to have a very good doctor to monitor my pregnancy and provide advice till I go back. I have heard so many scary stories of doctors here so I just want to be cautious an fed get the best treatment possible.

I read people recommending Dr Maria Carvalho. I did a little digging online and saw she was involved in a law suit with Aga Khan by a couple whose baby died. Is there a site where I can read the history and background of doctors similar to doctors.Com in the US to help me better decide and if so how valid are these sites?  Thank you.

Dr. Kigen 0722774991. He practices in Nairobi Hospital and is the head of all obgyns in Kenya, I am told. I have never seen him personally but have been referred several times to him. I have seen Dr. Acharya in Mombasa Hospital. He is the best I HAVE seen so far in Kenya and I used him for my 1st baby here and he was incredible (if you travel to mombasa frequently which I was happy to do lol). He even ran all updated tests and was up to date (when I went home in my 2nd trimester, I took his tests to my doctor there and she said he was even more thorough they they typically are). :).   Congrats on your first baby!! I'm now on, no.3 here in Kenya. Its so fun!!!

Congrats on your pregnancy!

I moved to Nairobi when I was 7 months pregnant and received exceptional care from Dr. PS Patel at Aga Khan, where I delivered my little one.  He was very thorough and I felt that he sincerely wanted to see my birth plan through.  He cares, has a lifetime of experience, is thorough and just lovely.  His number: 020 3741065, 3750362, 3740000 x 2714.

Congratulations.

If you dont mind an old but experienced/seasoned and reputable doctor, I highly recommend Dr. S.R. Patel based at Nairobi Hospital.  You can call the Hospital's pilot number 2845000 and they can transfer you to his office.  I am a mother of 3 sons who were all delivered by a Mr. Petersen (now retired) who was in his 70s at the time.  So yes, if age is not a factor, I would say go for Dr. Patel.

Yes. I recommend P.S Patel as well. He has helped deliver 3 babies in my famil. Last one was born last week...first one is now 16.
He came highly highly recommended.

Please be very careful if going to see S**** at Nairobi Hospital.  He asks women to completely undress their upper body and then ‘examines' their breasts.  Totally unnecessary for an obstretric appointment.  He does all this with a nurse in the room, giving it the air of being completely reasonable.  The nurses are paid to say nothing.  It's utterly awful.  He is a total creep.  Please don't put yourself through this.

I had a similar experience with a recommended Dr like that as well in that clinic opposite Agha Khan coming up to 3 years ago now, as it was my second child, I knew it wasn't necessary and didn't go with it and changed Drs altogether! Same thing with calling a nurse inside. He thought I was being extra and said how are you going to let me deliver your child then, I told him a Dr can deliver my child no problem but this isn't necessary!

Sorry I posted replying on the thread and didn't give a recommendation, as I wrote already I changed Drs and actually tried a few before settling for The Anderson Clinic in The Doctors Plaza, you don't see the same Dr each time, it varies between 4 or 5 I think but I have found it altogether a very reasonable experience and the Dr who delivered my baby in the end I had never actually met but she happened to be on call that day, I was very happy with her and followed up with her in her clinic which was in another building near to Nairobi hospital as well. I was happy at that clinic as well because no where else I went was a urine sample requested each time. Anyway good luck!

Thank you so much for your post.  Sounds like there are many women in this boat.  Shouldn't we all be writing to the press and to the hospitals to let them know about this awful sexual misconduct by doctors?  It's unbelievable that they get away with it and women are shamed into keeping silent by the doctors pretending that this is medically necessary.  What can we do to put an end to this and ensure these men are brought to justice?

You're welcome, I'm glad I read the post.

I just hope women are aware of what actually needs to be checked when they go to a gynaecologist, other than that, I am a little doubtful anything can be done, but word of mouth is powerful. In Kenya Drs are recommended mainly by peers or previous patients so they do tread on thin ice already.

That is *** at Nairobi Hospital who ‘examines' women's breasts - totally disgusting behaviour.  He is a soft spoken old I** man and hides behind that aura.  Should be jailed.

OMG that's intimidating. Sorry this happened to you ladies. Will be careful with whom I choose.

<<Shouldn't we all be writing to the press and to the hospitals to let them know about this awful sexual misconduct by doctors?>>

This isn't Europe, or the USA and unfortunately doctors in Kenya are virtually untouchable.  To the best of my knowledge no one has successfully sued a doctor in Kenya, despite incidents such as these, or doctors performing unnecessary surgery/treatments, unnecessarily lengthy stays in hospital, not referring on to appropriate specialists........to name a few issues in addition to sexual misconduct.

My take on it is that doctors appear to be primarily concerned with their incomes and ego's.

Thank you and good luck to you!

Yes and that's exactly what it sounds like. It's even more frightening to know that nothing is done about their actions.

Hi , please be careful on what you post based on facts and research. I am a lawyer and very many doctors have been successfully sued and stripped off their practicing licenses.

There are good doctors out there, not all are "unprofessional" as you portray them to be.
Good day.
