IESS Health Care Crisis: Probe Declares GYE Hospital "Emergency"

The health-care section of Ecuador's Social Security system (IESS) -- into which a growing number of Expats have paid since January 2014 -- is in crisis.

The Pan Am Post reports that based on an investigation that began in December 2014, investigators last week declared Teodoro Maldonado Carbo, the IESS's primary hospital for beneficiaries, to be in a "state of emergency."

The hospital in Guayaquil has racked up $900-million in debt.

Problems plaguing the hospital include corruption, major performance failures and insufficient medicines.

33 areas of the hospital have been identified by a manager's report as needing urgent attention.

Due to recent "legal reforms," more money is being allocated to IESS.

Surprised this topic hasn't gotten more attention (assuming report is accurate). Was under the impression one of the appealing factors for retired expats is the reasonable cost of healthcare in Ecuador. On the positive, at least the fact there are problems is being acknowledged. Hopefully things can get fixed before they get anymore out of hand.
