Vietnam to change area codes of 59 cities, provinces from March

The area codes of almost all of the 63 cities and provinces of Vietnam are slated to be changed in March, when a new decree issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications takes effect.

Four northern provinces, Phu Tho, Vinh Phuc, Hoa Binh, and Ha Giang, will have their area codes unchanged as 210, 211, 218 and 219, respectively.

The area code of Hanoi will be 24 instead of 4, and Ho Chi Minh City, 28 instead of 8.

The new code of the central city of Da Nang will be 236 instead of the current 511, while the respective numbers for Hai Phong in the north and Can Tho in the Mekong Delta will be 225 and 292, from the current 31 and 710.

Making a big mess ! I did lost lots of customers from last number changing.

But VietNam still complies with the International Numbering Plan which limits internal codes to no more than 10 - including the subscriber number.

Strange thing to do given that all the switches are digital and landline numbers are declining. Can't be based on geography since adjoining provinces of DakNong 261 (501), DakLak 262 (200), Gia Lai 269 (59) and KonTum 260 (60) and Lam Dong (Da Lat) 263 (63).

Perhaps some minister is just trying to leave his mark or the changes portend yet further upcoming changes - possibly political. External telecom companies want in to VietNam as allowed for by the WTO agreement.
