It is my understanding they're very strict.
I would strongly suggest you obey the local laws.

Exceedingly strict now. Lots of stop and search on the street. No-one will give you a job if you are illegal as if they do, they have to pay large fines. Anyway, the pay is so low, it really is not that interesting to work in Malaysia. There is a foreign workers scheme which enables people from Asia to come and take up the low paid and long hour jobs. So other nationalities dont really get a chance to find work.
