Car insurance

I will only be in Ireland for one year but want to buy a car and need insurance. I have a US license. The US does not have a "no claims bonus" system but I have no citations or accidents charged against me. I did have a claim when a deer ran into the side of my car last year but that was not considered my fault. Any ideas?

As far as I know, to be insured, you'll have to get a local driving licence - don't think you can be insured on a US licence. I know someone who has just arrived from the US and has years of driving experience behind him and he had to pass his Irish license and is now insured as if he was a brand new driver with no experience! (i.e. expensive) So I'd say phone around a few insurance companies to see what they require but it will probably be an Irish driving licence, not sure an international driving licence would cut it either.

Thanks for the reply but I did find insurance with my US license.  Yes it was very expensive, about 1,750 euro for the year on my 2005 Honda.  I got it direct from AXA insurance.

Hi,

Insurance in Ireland is troublesome, especially for foreigners. However, in my search I received a golden tip from one of my new colleagues. Go to Clements Worldwide, they are partnered with AIG in Ireland and will set you up for a very decent price.

Kind regards,
Arthur

In order to drive a car on a public road in Ireland, each driver must be covered by insurance under the Road Traffic Acts. Where motor tax and NCT relate directly to the individual vehicle, insurance is different in that it is an individual matter. There are many options and just a few complications. A car may be insured in one family member's name but that may not cover another member of the family
