LOL, there are no British (or Western) technicians or manual workers in this country!

There is NO way you can work as as a car repairman here, as that job is reserved for people from 3rd world countries, and they get paid peanuts.  Of course, the owners of the body shops earn a lot, but you can't own a small business here if you are not Saudi.

As for Industrial spray painting, I don't know anything about it, but again, as a British national (I am assuming you are one), you can't work as a manual worker, technician, factory workers, plumber, electrician, etc., no matter how good you are.  Those jobs are for people from poor countries, as the pay is very little. (also, anybody can be a plumber, technician, electrician, or car repair person here, as there is no education/diploma required for such jobs)

Having said that, Saudis love Westerners (but only the whites, they are jealous of brown/black Westerners and don't like them), and stories abound of British and American plumbers and electricians coming to Saudi and being hired as supervisors, foremen, and project managers at constructions sites with big salaries (£3-5k per month, plus free accommodation).  My father (civil engineer) personally knew one such person.  If you want to do something like that, I don't know how you could get your foot in.

What I have said also applies to the other rich Gulf countries.

Yorkshire .That is the place where I grew up as a kid. Wonderful countryside. I would like to live there for ever.

Now coming to the real issue.

I think you could get a fitter/ mechanic/ supervisor type job at a western multinational construction site or industry.

You need to do a little personal networking by contacting any of your friends already working in similar capacities there are a lot of jobs advertised in the national newspapers where you could apply, the problem will be for construction site or oilfields, the requirement will be to have experience in similar fields but there is no harm in applying. The recruiting agencies normally have a short deadline to fill in these positions and you may get the chance,

I know a few guys who have set up small/ medium garages in Dubai/ Sharjah ( UAE) , There you could run a business with little to no involvement of a Local National, but this is setting up your own business. I believe you are interested in working for a garage, There is a multimillion  dollar car reconditioning and re-export business , involving mechanical and body works in  workshops including " BAKED PAINT BOOTHS" where I believe you would be interested.

Cheers for the reply riazcdki

To be honest I was thinking of taking a brake from the motor trade 16yrs now thought I'd have a go at something else.Maybe apply my skills to the industrail side of things I seen a job advertised few months back a sandblasted/paint sprayer. It was working on industrail pipes etc.
It's the same everywhere it's not what you know it's who you know.
I've applied to a few firms sent my c.v to a few different firms  but getting nothing back.
How did you get out there?
What steps would you recommend I take from here?

Hello hmch,

OK CHEERS PAL

Ei mate, ( I think this is how we said hello in Yorkshire)

Please keep me posted on your job hunt. Two suggestions:

1) You may start building up your CV, simple certificates from England, HNC, HND, letters of references from your previous employers, appreciation notes from customers play wonders.

2) You may plan to  take a holiday in Dubai or Bahrain, stay at a simple hotel, meet people at restaurants and call up the jobs advertised in the local english newspaper.

At least this journey will be a pleasant experience for the rest of your life!
