the purpose that PMs are disabled is simple; in my opinion, it is done to deter "lonely wanderers" who come onto the forum in search of a mate, however, Expat.com is NOT a dating website, therefore you have to be a proper participating, contributing member to our little society of expats and nomads before you are allowed to interact with the expats one-on-one.
and anyways, if such people do find a way past the security and pretend to be helpful only to be able to send PMs, they will soon be discovered, reported, and removed.
so our advice to these people is; don't waste your time, we're on to you already
