Stoves

Does anyone use propane instead of electricity for their stoves?    Can an electric stove be converted to propane?   Or can a stove utilize both propane and electric?    Am considering using as a cost cutting measure.   Does it make a substantial difference in cost?   Many thanks

You can not convert an electric stove to anything. You may want to look at a dual fuel stove, gas up top and an electric oven below. Im not sure about availability here but most manufactures in the US offer it.

Most stoves and cook tops here use propane. You have to have space to store your tank. Can't convert from one to another, though. Electric ovens are used professionally as the temps. tend to be more stable/constant.
It does make a difference on your utility bill. Also, best to use gas for frequent power outages.

We did look for a dual one years ago, and they were only available in the very high priced units. You could  purchase cook top and built in oven separately though.

Thanks for your helpful replies re stoves.   Never even heard of a propane stove before!

Most gas cook tops and ovens that use gas are built for use with natural gas.  You simply need to buy a conversion kit to adapt them to propane.  Most kits just require the changing of the orifice.  We will be using propane for our cook top, clothes drier (when the clothes are not hanging outside) and a supplementary instant on propane water heater in case the solar hot water cannot keep up on those rainy days.

The gas stoves that are commonly seen in the stores here, such as Importa Mongo, Gollo, etc, are usually propane ready This will differ if you purchase one of the 'better' ones  from elsewhere, as will a dryer.
