Hello everyone, my name is Todd and I was born in The Staes.... I AM NOT A PATRIOT. At the age of 49, alone, knowing no one and having never been outside the U.S. I flew to SE Asia and spent the next 6 months backpacking through Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia. To say my life was forever transformed would be the understatement of the millennium! Well it's been almost 4 years and I've saved a little money and I am feeling that longing(actually I felt the longing before I even left) for SE Asia.So next April 1st or earlier I'll be flying back to Bangkok/Chiang Mai/Yangon for Thingyan for about a week. Then travel around India and Nepal ending up back in Yangon hopefully to find a job teaching English. I taught English in Bangkok in 2012 and LOVED it.
Hoping housing isn't going to be too expensive. Would like to live totally off what I'm making as a teacher, I can live very simply. If it ends of being too expensive then off to Chiang Mai, Cambodia(yes I know the teaching jobs suck.... so I've read), or HCMC, VN.
Any comments or suggesting would be greatly appreciated.

I'm from Italy and I'll move to myanmar the 29th of August. I've already been there with my university in March to conduct research about tourism. As I got in love with this country I decided to write my thesis about Bagan. So I'll pass the first five days in yangon, then Bagan for one month and then yangon again as I'm planning to do an internship (still planning) there.

No substantive comment, Todd, other than that my escape from the States for a SEAsia experience parallels your own in very many ways! It has been exceptional in all respects! My name is Malcolm. I am originally from England but as I have spent so long in Australia, I count myself as Australian.
I have been in Myanmar for seven months as a self funded volunteer English teacher. I have just finished a two month teaching assignment in Kyonpyaw and I am looking for another challenge.
I would prefer teaching in a Monastery school as I would like to learn to meditate.
I will soon leave for Thailand for a visa run and will have a six month visa on my return.
Can anyone out there give me any feedback to help me relocate myself in somewhere interesting. Remote is good.

Dear Expats,

my name is Bernd, I'm from Germany and I came to Yangon in April 2015. I will stay up to December and then maybe move to new missions in other countries.

Because I am only for 9 months here it did not make sense for m to rent an apartment. So I decided to go to a hotel. After inspecting some I decided for

ASAHI Hotel in Tarmwe, Yangon.

The manger offered a good rate for a long term stay, and so I have a nice room for about 1,000 US $ which is pretty good, if you compare to apartment rents. In the evening all is done, when I come home. No washing, cleaning etc. . . . and the breakfast is also included. The rooms are nice and clean, and you have free WiFi. You have AC, TV, minibar . . . what else can you expect.

There is a restaurant in the hotel which offers a nice menu 24/7 as well and staff is very kind. I feel very well there.

Once you are here for some weeks or months you might want to explore the country.

Here is the address of a travel agency with whom I made a 4 days trip to Bagan. The trip was perfect, the conditions were fair and the manager took personally care for me as the only foreigner, and all that for a favorable price.

I am very much excited to know about Myanmar culture.

Friends please guide me how safe is Myanmar and how about the cost of living over there? Because my salary package is not that much high, 1100 US $ and they providing Accommodation.

Is that sufficient to survive there and also saving?

for my feeling Myanmar is pretty safe, and whether 1100 $ are sufficient or not - I think they are, if accommodation is provided.

If you can make savings depends on your lifestyle and if you are alone or not. At least you will survive.

Yes they providing accommodation plus 1100 US$. The only thing is I need to bear Food cost.

I am not the right person to answer that question because I am a German Expat and I eat maybe different to locals. I live in a hotel, and so I pay more for a dinner for example like a Myanmari person.

I was told by my local colleagues that 150 to 200 $ would be sufficient if you buy from the market and cook by yourself, but if you buy from restaurants, you need more.

I can't confirm that because in the hotel I can't prepare food by myself.

Hope that helps, but we need postings from others as well.

     My name is John from Singapore. I am an Indian by race as well.  Just came back from Yangon few days ago. I was there setting up my new spa.  In the event accommodation is provided, your salary scale is amounting to those hotel manager's pay, which is sufficient.
  The food here is relatively closely link to Indian way of cooking with spices etc and price are reasonable except for Hotel food, which are relatively expensive and not tasty !
   Is a beautiful country, beautiful people and culture. It's better than India, in my humble opinion

Food on average cost 1 USD in simple eat out. Clean Guest house with breakfast cost 30 USD per day  with aircon

I am an Indian Qualified Lawyer with almost 5 years of experience in the Corporate Legal Sector.
In terms of education, I did my graduation from a premier Indian institute, ILS Law College, which is Pune, Maharashtra, India, followed with a post graduation from Durham University, United Kingdom.
I am currently looking to work as an expat in myanmar, my reason to come to Myanmar is that  Myanmar is developing quite a bit and at a rapid speed. A lot of telecom companies are eyeing at Myanmar for expansion and the Legal IT industry always interests me.

During a recent trip to Myanmar I have noticed that the Myanmar tourism branch is booming. However, the level of knowledge about hotel and catering management, and the level of knowledge of English could be improved. I have been teaching hotel and catering management for 24 years and for the last 5 years I have been working as an English language teacher.
