New members of the Mexico forum, introduce yourself here

Thank you very much for taking the time to address my message.  We chose SMA for its beauty and climate and seems to have a variety of activities.  We do not care for expensive restaurants, etc but are gym rats and would like the availability of a nice gym and maybe opportunites for hiking, etc. Even though we would love to meet expats, we are comfortable in a mostly Mexicanenvironment.

Of course you are right--affordability is subjective and we really need to visit and find out for ourselves.. Again, thanks.

Thank you so much for replying to my message, especially guess you are still finding your own way.  We chose SMA for its beauty and climate but have concerns of its affordability for us.  Can you address that issue?

We do not have expensive tastes but are kind of gym rats so would like a nice gym and opportunities  for hiking, etc.  Seems like SMA offers a myriad of cultural evens and various classes.

Please let me know your insights so far.  Thanks, again.

Hey, hello!! Reading you, makes me realize I did something wrong... lol.
I'm actually living in Mexico but I want to work abroad. Since long time ago, It
has been one of my dreams to work as a teacher in another country...

Every time I go to Cancun...I just want to stay. I can practice law remotely from Cancun and go back to Texas every few weeks. I would like to have some friends down there. I don't play golf. I like to workout and party and be on the white beaches. Ask me questions if you like and I'll see if I have an answer. Shay

Ps. I tried to load a photo...didn't  take.

Hello I want to join this forum, because I plan to move to Mexico for a long period, starting this year.
My focus is on places on the east coast from Cancun and southwards.
Would like to find affordable apartment and want to learn basic Spanish in the long run.
I am retired and love to work online to develop my marketing business.
And I am fond of sailing and diving.
So I would like to read posts from any people (foreign) living in Mex. as expat.
Thanks,
Menno

Welcome, Playa Del Carmen is the perfect spot. Divers everywhere and a vibrant expat community. Lots doing the on-line work, safe, friendly, just big enough!

Hi  I am retiring this next year and would like my husband and I to spend Winters in a warm climate.  I would like to learn as much about expat living in Mexico as I can to see if there is a place that my husband and I could be comfortable.

I'm a woman in my sixties-retired-relatively well-travelled and well educated. My lack of resources in retirement have led me to research  living in other countries. I  have been reading and researching possible places to move to for several years. I have friends that are renting my house, thus affording me the opportunity to spend two months living somewhere else. I chose Guanajuato. I have an apartment lined up for July and August. My concern is that because my Spanish is not good, I will have a hard time making friends. I would like to know how I can locate people to associate with, in the beginning. I am also interested in the process other people went through in making their decision to move to another country and to choose where. I am single and wonder if anyone can address that aspect as well. I should add that I am a 'young" sixty something and in good health, and fit.

Thanks,
I've heard from other people that PDC is a good place to saty.
Do you have any tips for me to find a good apartment? preferably not in tourist zones.
And what is the rental price range.
Sorry I didn't see your name, but I guess you're the one just replied me.
Thanks,
Menno

Hello there Folks, I'm an attorney practicing law in Dallas Texas. It's basically a short hop to Cancun. If I may ask for your opinion, I'd like to a situation where I live partly in Cancun and partly in Dallas where I practice. Is it practical, has anyone of you done it, do you have any advice ...warning.. etc.? Thanks. Shay Rastegar

You are travelling on a tourist visa, air, cant see an issue, Cancun is not a "friendly" place, in many folks opinion, tho

yes, walking around works best, especially that it is not high season. Andele on the net, is for rentals. Stick to "centro", say from calle 10 to 30th and watch for the quiet places! What are you looking for in particular? and what price? You can go from 500 to 1000 a month. Its a very easy place to get used to and to get around in. Msg me for any questions. Hotter than hell in the summer!

Hello Susan and Husband.....It seems that we are basically seeking the same type of thing. If I may...I've found Cancun somewhat easier than other places because at any time I miss home...really all I've got to do is step outside in the tourist area. Also....it seems that the ratio of bilingual intelligence in Cancun is basically the same as San Antonio, Texas which is rather comforting for those of us that are just trying to get as intelligent linguistically or maybe rather linguistically challenged, if I may. And it's beautiful... did I say that? Shay Rastegar

Hello Watski: did you say  Andele on the net? I'll definitely check it out. Thank you for the advice. I like Playa Del Carmen too. Actually lived there for a few months a few years ago and loved it except for the Jungle fever.....

PS.: I hope to be of help in the future....I look forward

Cancun has a Kaanapali feel, and is about as authentic as Kaanapali is. The locals are very tourist focused and they drop the standard Spanish formalities to make the tourist feel comfortable. It's sort of like visiting a Disney version of Mexico. Don't get me wrong I like to visit there, but wall to wall tourist is a bit much as a regular diet so I don't live there. It is also more expensive then most other places. There are plenty of tourist trinkets to buy and timeshares or beach rentals to look at. If you can afford it and tourists places are comfortable for you it should be fine.

I haven't found Cancun to be unfriendly, if you can communicate with the locals. I have found some of the tourists unpleasant, and I have been embarrassed by how they treat the locals.  Those who serve your food, and clean your room deserve respect. If you remember this Cancun will seem much more friendly.

I have lived in Mexico since 2003. First living in Puerto Vallarta for over 7 years never having a problem. I have lived in the Yucatan now for 4 years and it has been a nightmare from the get go. The people here in imigration are very ignorant people and have no idea how things work. It's like another world here. I am looking for other people who have had problems with the imigration dept. here. Please tell your story. It needs to be heard!!!!

What are they ignorant of? What's the issue? Shay

Can you be more specific ? What exactly is different in the Yucatan? If the laws are national, why would they be different  from place to place ?

Although he sounds very stressed ,  apparently,,,the laws have and do change so quickly........as well these are. apparently. new employees after an overhaul, as in other areas of Government.

This whole thing about laws changing and fast and them being ignorant and all sounds very cryptic. What law has changed? What are they ignorant of?  who's ignorant? What'supdoc????.   Cumon... make some sense. This sounds like there's some other conversation some where else and a part of it trickles down here.

There must have been a post from him I didn't see. Where did it say these were new employees, hired after an overhaul ?, or after new regulations ?

I have been to Mexico twice on a research mode on where to long stay for the duration of winter in Canada. So far, I have seen a lot of Cancun, a little of Tulum and Valladolid but am still looking. I have not decided where to locate in Mexico yet but I'm hoping I would find my little piece of paradise soon!

I am presently residing in Valle de Bravo, Mexico.  I have been living there for the past two years. It is beautiful here and I absolutely love it.  Would love to meet a travel companion. Have a car.

Valle de Bravo is a beautiful Town. Shay

Re: Moving to cancun Hi there!

My name is Anouk, I'm from Montréal Canada. I'm moving to Playa del Carmen with my family on August 2014. I would like to meet new people to help me with my integration in the country.

I also speak French and you can read my introduction in the French version of the site.

Have a good day!

hi
i am new here.looking for friends for networking and socialising here in Mexico.someone i can rely and trust.thank you

Hi everybody here!! I hope everything is going well for all, Im a photographer passing by Mexico! :)  cheers!

Hi Colleen
I would advise you to go ahead and make the application for temporal residency through your local or closest Mexican consulate before you go down.  For temporal application you must start that process in the states or Canada at MX consulate. There may be an exception for residency for teaching (that you can make the application process inside MX) , but if you are looking for longer term temporal residency status you must apply at Mexican consulate.

My wife and I have been living full time in Tulum, Mexico since 2007.  We have a website that also helps people with questions about moving to Mexico called Mexico on My Mind.

All the best and good luck with your planning!

Ron

Thanks so much Ron.  How are you?  I really appreciate your information! :)
I'm currently down in Zamora, Michoacan, with a temporary Tourist Visa.  I
have a prepaid, return ticket to Toronto for the Christmas holidays.  I do,
however, fully intend to return to Mexico in the new year again.

As we speak, I am looking into a different teaching position from my current
one.  I had thought of the Merida area.  Do you know of anything there, i.e.
teaching-wise?  I would be extremely grateful for any potential leads to check
into, please.

And what is your website you mentioned, please, Ron?  I hope you and your
wife are having a terrific day!

~ Colleen

Merida is a wonderful cosmopolitan Mexican city, very interesting architecture and mix of history and cultures. Come visit us at "Mexico on My Mind" which will allow me to share some links with you.

Ron

Thanks, Ron, as I'd missed your website name ...
I actually had already discovered it, and receive
your e-mails.  Terrific! :)

~ Colleen

OK cool Colleen, you can reach me through [email protected], I have a good contact for you in Merida.

Gosh, thank you, Ron.  Will definitely keep in touch.
I am not very happy here, as the hiring school had,
unfortunately, misrepresented a few things.  Now,
of course, that I've voiced my concerns, they are
trying to make amends.  Because I am a person of
integrity and commitment, I'm doing my best to make
the best of a not-so-great situation ... Shall see how
things go in the next little while.  It's a long way to
come only to be disappointed ...

Wonderful to have your support, Ron.  I'm very
appreciative.  Have a terrific afternoon - what's left
of it! :)

Take care,
Colleen

He wants you to move to Ajijic?, And also says that you buy a lot at Tec Campus Chihuahua, which is really what you need?. In that I can help?

My name is Sid Grosvenor and I've lived at Lake Chapala for over a decade. I love to share about our little slice of paradise here. Check out my website at [link moderated]. I post new content twice weekly and membership is free, Just look for the Big Red Arrow and sign up below. Op out any time . We do not sell, trade or in other way abuse
your email address.

There are over 5 years of archived articles, short posts and videos available. I believe in "telling" it like it is without
any sugar coating. Mexico, even Lake Chapala - Ajijic is just not right for everyone, but that being said for the estimated 20,000 plus of us that live along about 30 miles of the North Shore's towns and villages it as close to heaven on earth as we've found.

I'm enjoying all the comments about other places in Mexico that are of interest to North Americans. I've been to most of them.  All for now, Look forward to being an active member of the group, All for now,

Tu amigo nuevo, Sid Grosvenor

I am a retired educator.  I went on a tour to learn if the Lake Chapala area would be a good fit.  I got scared off by the prices of housing ( we were shown upscale developments) and by the reported crime.  Should have moved, anyway.  I an now planning a trip this fall.  I will go back in spring to rent a house, returning shortly thereafter with dogs and clothes.  I would stay 3-4 months.  I can then return to US and move my stuff down.  I have read a lot about moving there, but still have questions. I hope I can get some answers here.  When I experience the move, etc., I hopefully will be able to help others.

Hello!

My name is Adriana. I am planning on moving to San Miguel de Allende in the next several months to study international trade/law. However, I am hoping to find a job prior to moving there. I have found it very difficult to find job openings.  Do any of you have any suggestions as to how I can find job openings. I'm a lawyer, but I have a Bachelor's degree in English. I am open to consider any professional position including, but not limited to anything related to the law and/or teaching where I can utilize my skills. Any thoughts and/or comments will be greatly appreciated.

HI Everyone,

Yes we are NEWBIES.  My husband and I settle in Cancun as snowbirds every year.  We stay 5 months and love it.  We have always arrived via airplane but this year we are thinking of driving so we would actually have wheels to do a little sight seeing.  Driving the distance seems a little scary to us though.  We are not fluent in Spanish either.  Does anyone meet at the Texas border and drive the trek together........caravan style?  Safety in numbers please.  We are shooting for after Christmas but before New Years.  Ideally approx. Dec. 28th

Hi, I'm Suzy Hager.   I haven't been to Mexico since 1990.    I was 35, blond hair and had a new Jimmy 4 x 4.  After being in an abusive relationship for 15 years Mexico gave me my self-esteem back.  I used to like to drive at night because less traffic...I was the same in Mexico.   No fears, everybody treated me very well.

Now that I'm retired I do plan on spending time down there.   At 61 I might not get three marriage proposals per day but I still love Mexico.  Food, climates, vegetation, beaches, and culture.

This was as a response to the gentleman who asked about using his CT DL in Mexico.  That is why I clicked on Reply...Use your CT driver's license and then when it is time for it to expire, I can help.  You'd be surprised as to how easy it is when you know who to go to.  [email protected]  Cars are a different thing.  You'd do best to buy one here in Mexico, but I can help with my experiences there too.
