New members of the Canada forum, introduce yourself here

Canada has strict laws against discrimination when its comes to hiring. However the other dimension to it is the fact that they'll discriminate between Canadians and PR against non-Canadians and non-PR, simply because jobs should be given to locals first.

To make yourself count, you'll have to have a  skill set that they can't find anywhere else. Also with the new immigration process which is the Express Entry now bases on LMIA (Labor Market Impact Assessment) which basically looks and see how much locals in that job category of yours are unemployed. The more locals in that field are unemployed, the worst of chance you have to get a better score. To my knowledge, IT field is constantly expanding and there's not enough talent to fill the void.

Hi Kevyn
Welcome to both Canada and the blog!
I hope you are enjoying your time in Canada.
Where are you in Canada right now?
Hope it's not too cold =)

Hi, my name here is LLGM and I just discovered Expatblog.  I am an expat from the US but have lived here in Canada for more than 40 years, so I'm not a Canadian newbie.

I wanted to connect with this site to expand my contacts with US folks living in Canada and to help make sure all US expats living here (and elsewhere abroad) were informed about FATCA, the US law that came into effect all over the world last July 1 (yes, on Canada Day, 2014).  Further, to share that Canada is, currently, the only place in the world with an active federal lawsuit against the US FATCA and the Canadian IGA (accepting FATCA as superceding our Charter of Rights and Freedoms).

If anyone is interested in knowing more, I'd be pleased to share some information and a number of amazing US Expat.com-website addresses they can check out.

Happy New Year to all
LLGM

PS to Domi007 - Do consider coming to Canada; if you get a US Greencard you are signing yourself up to life-long tax obligations to the US and ongoing tax filing on every financial account you have in your past-residency non-US countries - -  even if you move to another country or return to your home country.

Hey Everyone...
My self Hiren Rajani...By professional i am an engineer...so thinking about moving canada for some new adventures....So help my guys...Thanks in advance....

Hello smith40311
Welcome!
I do wish you good luck in you quest for adventures in Canada. There are many opportunities if you are willing.
I'm sure if you checked a few companies in Canada that are looking for engineers you will have no problem. =)

Hi, this was tacked onto my new-member introduction but I thought I should paste it on your intro message so it gets directly to you, Domi007:

Once one becomes a "taxable person" in the US (which one accepts with the GreenCard status), they are very unwilling to let you go.  Read up on Citizen Based Taxes and FATCA; the US is one of only two countries in the world that taxes based on citizenship (the other being Eritrea), so this "forever obligation" is not well known or understood by people brought up in other countries.....  Good luck.

Hello LLGM,

On behalf of everybody here at Expat-blog, welcome on board. We hope your participation here will be both enjoyable and informative.

It is a pleasure for me personally to welcome a new member from my hometown Hamilton, ON.

Good morning, James, and Happy New Year to you from the cold white north.  Thanks for the warm welcome; indeed, I really like your WELCOME-in-many-languages-and-flags sign.  Unlike the past dozen or so years when New Years' was spent in sunny south Florida, this year we are experiencing (most of the) winter staying in Canada; as there is little snow or ice on the streets just yet, I am enjoying this change so far, especially watching the partially-frozen creek, the active small animals and neighborhood lights out my window.

As mentioned in my intro, my initial motivation in exploring Expatblog was to connect with other US expats to see how they are faring in this new FATCA era.  Over the past year I've been blogging with a wide range of  Canadians about this developing concern over at the Isaacbrocksociety.ca; there have been posters there from across the world, particularly a number of other European countries (where access to banking services are being shut down to US Persons), a few from the middle east and Japan, but nothing from Mexico, Central, South America or Africa.  It would be so interesting to connect here and see if such expats would be interested in sharing their FATCA-while-abroad experiences with us here in Canada.  Further, I wanted to let others around the world know about (thought others might be interested to know about) the Canadian Constitutional Challenge (in relation to FATCA and the signed IGA) - - the first and only (as far as we know) such currently organized and active litigation in the world.

As a newbie here, if you can make suggestions as to how best to approach this, I would greatly appreciate your ideas.
Again, Happy and auspicious start to 2015

Hello my name is Haig, South African but have been living in New Zealand since 2004.  Looking at Canada as a home and want to apply for a work permit.  I'm hoping to connect with South Africans or any like minded people who are now in Canada or in the process of doing so.  Toronto looks appealing and may hold a few job opportunities, I have a background in the casino environment, retail sales of specialist audio/visual equipment, management and business operator.

It would be nice to get some input and feedback from you guys and maybe forge a friendship or 2  :top:   Are the Canadians tolerant of new comers or is it a 'this is my country what are you doing here' vibe?  I have met a few Canadians here and all seemed very pleasant and respectful.

LLGM,

In the interest of conserving space here and not going off topic I will send you a private message with a few suggestions.

Cheers, and Happy New Year,

Hello Blue Husky,

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have been the top 3 destinations chosen by newcomers to Canada for decades now. As a result it is extremely difficult to find employment there, since you are competing with all the other newcomers and unemployed or underemployed local residents for every single job vacancy. You are really looking a an uphill battle there.

For job searching I'd recommend  www.monster.ca   and   www.workopolis.com  and suggest thinking in terms of Calgary, Edmonton or Halifax where you're going to stand a better chance of landing a job.

Regarding visas visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada official website and fill out the online information to see if you qualify for a visa.

Hi BlueHusky,
Canadians are generally VERY open to people from many different parts of the world and different backgounds, big cities of course generally more than small towns.  Toronto is particularly a multi-cultural haven and has quite a number of South African immigrants, many here for a long time.  Montreal has a lot of people of different nationality but French language is predominant - - something to think about as well as it is colder than Toronto. Vancouver is very interesting - - more "laidback" than either Toronto or Montreal, but be aware that overall it is more expensive to live there than in Toronto, which has many different neighborhoods with pockets of older, less pricey homes or rental apartments; and public transit is very good. Of course, it depends on what you want to do.  This assumes you want big city.

As mentioned by James, you should also look at other communities.  Calgary, and Edmonton may be tough right now because of the falling oil prices & likely economic downturn for a while.  Halifax is a really nice place if you are okay with maritime ambiance plus a great spirit.  You might also want to check out other cities like Hamilton, London or Windsor, Ontario (the latter has lots of casinos, as does Niagara Falls) .  Do think about how far north (how long and cold of a winter) you may be willing to deal with - - long winters can be dark and, for some, depressing.

Hope this gives you some food for thought.  Happy New Year.

hello everyone, I am new here and originally Nepal.

stayed in vancouver, toronto and now again back in toronto..
looking for friendship networking..

hello everyone, i am dayour from Nigeria. i am planning on moving down to Canada to explore job opportunities, am looking at Edmonton and would like to know if this is a good idea. would also like to be enlightened on accommodation in Edmonton and also what it is like getting a job in Edmonton.

Hi  all fellow users of this site.

My name is Nat .
I am a mid 40 yrs old  qualified hgv mechanic.
I am currently employed in the public sector here in Ireland for the past 20 years . Unfortunately for me there is virtually no progression ( advancement) within this role & with an ever increasing amount of various taxes. Take home pay has got quite small considering the work involved.

I would appreciate any replies or help from similar skilled workers who have already taken the leap. I would initially be hoping to secure a similar full time & secure job within my field of qualification in either a main dealer hgv garage or hopefully a possibility of a maintenance role in the mining industry. Which should pay much better  in comparison to what seems on offer in the main dealer garages. I have all the current qualifications & main dealer qualifications. Also all current class of euros driving licence. But on moving to canada  some of these will not be recognised.

Enough for now . I would appreciate any leads or advise regarding the above to also include how much taxes etc I would actually pay. Also I would be hoping that my wife & 1  child could legally join me after a while.  And as a qualifies secondary school teacher she would naturally need to secure employment.
Thanks to all
Regards

Hello Nat,

On behalf of everybody here at Expat-blog, welcome on board. We hope your participation here will be both enjoyable and informative.

With regard to finding employment in your field you can try the following job search sites:

www.monster.ca     and     www.workopolis.com

Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver have been the top three destinations of choice for newcomers to Canada for several decades now, so finding jobs there will be extremely difficult since you end up competing for every vacancy with all the other newcomers to the country plus the unemployed/underemployed local residents. Uphill sledding for sure.

I would recommend looking to Edmonton and Calgary, Alberta or Halifaz, Nova Scotia where the likelihood of securing employment will be better and the cost of living lower.

Regarding your visa (if you find work) visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada official website and fill out the online information to see if you qualify for a visa.

www.cic.gc.ca/english

I see no reason why your wife would have to wait to join you later. Of course she would have to have her teaching credentials recognized in Canada before she could teach here, but that too is no big deal.

Hello,

My name is Roxane and I am 26. I moved from Paris France over 6 months ago. I posted a topic about meeting new people about an hour ago and although it is saying there are about 15 replies, I cannot see them. Can you please advise on why that is? Thanks so much,

Roxane

@turbohymac

I am not sure how this may work but given that your qualifications are from overseas especially his you are in the area where hands on skills applies, consider the red-seal program. I don't know much but I googled some stuff and there are some news about it.

This help folks from overseas get their qualifications abroad recognize.

Hi everyone, I am Bambang, 44 years old. Me and spouse really want to move into Canada to develop better life and career, especially in provinces of Nova Scotia, BC, New Brunswick or other. I have background as geologist, especially in coal exploration while my spouse work in trainning and development HRGA in one of very well known mall in Jakarta.  I need to broaden my network, gather any information about immigrate to Canada, and discuss everything that we may need to prepare to make our dream come true from other members in this forum.

regards,

Hi there, i am a 26year old white South African single male looking for work or any opportunities in Canada, as the markets here are becoming increasingly difficult for so called "white South Africans" to find work, i write this in fear and concern that we will soon be unable to find any kind of opportunities here. I have over 6 years experience in a variety of fields which include Hospitality, Sales, General, Fitness, Graphic and Web design. I have just been retrenched from my current position as the company liquidated. If you could assist in any way that would be greatly appreciated.

Kind Regards

Good day

I am Eric, I am married and have two little girls. We reside in Johannesburg, South Africa. We would love to move to Vancouver or Victoria in BC .
We have done some research. What we have found is that there are a lot of scams out there. We narrowly escaped a scam just this afternoon after making an inquiry last night. It seemed too fast of a reply and how can two seemingly different company's have the same number and introduction letter? It is too much of a coincidence, after some searching we found that it was indeed a scam.

Is it advisable to work directly with the Canadian embassy or is there a reputable agency that can assist us?
According to the Embassy it takes around six months to complete the whole process but I have heard of people doing it in three. What is the average?
We have many questions, but first we would like to get to know as many people as possible. The questions will answer them selves as we go along.

Hi Eric,

Welcome to the forum. I know of one that I use. She's based in Toronto... PM me and I'll give you her details. You can then do your due diligence to verify her. But my experience is that she's legit and she's done my work permit and PR application for me.

Hello Eric,

On behalf of everybody here at Expat-blog, welcome on board. I hope your participation here will be both enjoyable and informative.

As far as the visa for Canada goes, you should visit the Citizenship and Immigration Canada (government) website, fill in the online information and see if you qualify for a visa.

www.cic.gc.ca/english

CIC warns that everyone should be wary of fraudulent immigrations consultants right in their website too, and for a very good reason. Generally speaking even the legitimate ones don't do anything that you couldn't do for yourself for free.

Regarding jobs, you may want to check out www.monster.ca    or    www.workopolis.com   they are two reputable job search sites.

Exactly how did you receive these scam letters? Were they unsolicited e-mails? That in itself is the first clue that it's a scam.

Cheers,
James           Expat-blog Experts Team

Thanks James

We looked for immigration agents on the internet that are based in S.Africa. We completed their online questionnaire. It all seemed legit. We started doing inquiries last year. If I recall correctly I responded on a advert while doing research on Canada. The first company contacted me last year and informed me that my work experience and qualifications fall right into the required criteria and that there are jobs available in my line of work. Luckily we did not go ahead because of financial constraint brought about recent labour strikes in S.A. After the strikes we contacted the company but the lady that was our representative only said that our profile was moved to another person. A few weeks later this lady was no longer available .Coming the new year we attempted again but with another company. They contacted me literally the same day. When I checked their introduction letter and phone numbers, it was all the same as the first company. This was very suspicious, I did a internet search and found loads of complaints from people being ripped off.
I followed your advice about  fraud and found it very helpful. I am comfortable working with the right authorities.

Thank you very much.

We will need all the help we can get. Will keep in touch.

Yes, it's amazing just how few people think of doing something as simple as a Google search for something like "XYZ Immigrations Consultants complaints", Most of the known scams show up right away and they could save themselves all kinds of headaches.

Cheers,
James
