DUAL CITIZENSHIP

Both my husband and myself were born in Sri Lanka and now reside in Australia. I have Australian citizenship only, but my husband has both Australian and British Citizenship. Also my children were born in Australia. How easy is it for myself and my husband to obtain Sri Lankan citizenship to go and settle there? Thanks, Nel

The government has put a temporary halt to awarding dual citizenship status. A friend of mine tried obtaining his but was denied it and told to wait and see when it will be made available again.

It used to be a straightforward process previously, but for some reason Dual Citizenship is no longer available. Knowing how Sri Lankan regulations and politics operates, it is probably a matter of time before they authorities restart Dual Citizenship. Till then, you can always come to the country as a tourist. Best wishes.

Hi All,

Recently the Sri Lankan government resumed (on March, 2015) the granting of dual citizenship to Sri Lankan expats.

This thread aims to capture each applicants experience in obtaining dual citizenship. As of now, the expected time for this process is unclear, hopefully through your submissions we can get a rough idea.

My journey:

1) Application submitted to the Consulate General of Sri Lanka in Melbourne – 02/04/2015
2) Received confirmation of receipt of my application, by mail, from the Melbourne Consulate – 10/04/2015
3) Awaiting further response...

Yes the SL government has opened the option of Dual Citizenship in March of 2015.

From what I can tell is relatively a simple process as long as you can provide all the documents, they do ask for a lot of document including previous SL passport, Citizenship certificate from the country you are from, Police clearance letter (also from the country you are from) etc.

Hi DeSilva,

Did you end up getting your Sri Lankan citizenship for you and your wife?
