Normally EB Team used to send us greetings in our private email. I dont know whether it is valid for new version too until I will have my next b'day. 
1. My suggestion is to open a birthday widget for the members whose birthdays of the day for us to see it at a glance so we can greet him/her.
2. Some members do not like to give publicity to their birthday. But inside contact list you can reveal these personal details if the specific member is willing to share those details within friendships. (otherwise no need of being friends)
3.I propose to add some more symbols such as flowers, gifts and $.
