Moving and working in Namibia

Hi everone

I'm new to the forum, and relly glad i found this site.

I am currently in Port Elizabeth South Africa. My fiance got a job in Namibia for 4 years.

What do I need to do to apply for, to be able to stay with him in Namibia? Do I need a visa? residence permit? and when should I apply for a workers permit? while I'm still in South Africa?please help me, I don't have a clue where to begin. Im currently a Btech Marketing student and are in the process of completing my studies this year. Is there any jobs or interships available in this field?

Thank you

I don't know where your finace got a job in Namibia. If it's in Windhoek, it could match with your dreams. if not, forget it. This country is a mess. Exept you are a Bure. Then you will find a lot of "friends". Fighting against each other. If you are black: Be prepared of a lot of stupid racists from SA. 4 years - forget it. Better to go to Europe, Canada or even Asia. The people here are from the day before yesterday. And I am sure it will never change, because they think, they are the most clever ones here, not knowing, that there is a different world outside. The work permit will give you a suffering problem over many month. Don't do this! A truth recommondation.

I also want to move to Namibia with my fiance in a few months time, by then we would be married, but this reply to your question by "thisislife" is quite frankly scary and discouraging. I wish others can offer more comments to validate what he or she says. Nevertheless, I believe this move will be good for us, unless somehow plans change before then.

Thisislife, I'm sorry that you had such a terrible experience... It might have been incidental though, because my husband and I travelled to Namibia in November to investigate the possibilities of immigration. Honoustly, people couldn't have been more friendly and helpful. The regulation is strict, yes, exams for the assessment of previous education are though, but that's a good thing, because they care about their own population and don't want to let in, for instance, a medical doctor who can't validate his/her expertise. My impression was that the evaluations are fair.
The people we've met were not racist, on the contrary, our conclusion was that people from different backgrounds really cooperate well and are well-integrated.
So probably, like anywhere in the world, you have negative people, but we spoke to a huge number of people who were really positive and friendly, even exceptionally helpful.

Hi everyone,

I agree that Namibia is a wonderful country. I traveled there twice and had a wonderful time.
I believe you create your own experience with the attitude you have towards others.

Anyway, if your partner has a job and workpermit you can apply for a spousal (life partner) permit
meaning that you have the right to stay in Namibia based on the workpermit of your partner.
An endorsement can be applied for to work on the spousal permit but this is subject to another
(relatively easy) application.

Kind regards,

Hans Kroll

Thank you, Hans, that is very helpful. I was actually wondering about the same thing, because my husband has already found a job and I'm still in the process of applying for jobs. Good to have your contact details.

I am an Indian expat currently working in Ethiopia. I got an job offer from Namibia. I have already applied work visa and temporary work permit to Ministry of Home affairs and immigration two months before. I did not get any reply from them. How long it will take to get visa and work permit ? Plz. anybody reply :unsure

Thanks Hans for the information.

How do I get hold of the spousal permit for Namibia ? Can she only apply for this once I have received my working permit ? But in the meantime will she be able to company me to Namibia while we wait for the permit to be approved ?

I went to Namibia last December and its an amazing country with loads of opportunity in the IT field.

Thanks again !

Hi Geoff,

I have forwarded your query to my colleague who is specialised on Namibia and will ask her to respond to you.
What is your email address so I can ask her to email you.
