Registering a birth in Costa Rica

Make sure the fathers name is spelled correctly. You will have to wait a few days, a week or even a month or more, depending on where the birth takes place, to get the birth certificate.

Once you have the certificate, you can go to your Embassy of your home country and register the baby there.

You can also at this stage request a passport application from Costa Rica and the chosen country you have deemed the baby to have dual citizenship in.

Both parents must go the immigration, to get a stamp in the baby's passport saying that either or both parents are permitted to take the baby out of the country. If you do not do this it could cause problems at a later date as without this, a minor citizen of Costa Rica cannot be removed from the country. You can get a 'one time' stamp or a 'extended use' stamp.
