Reunion on the BBC

BBC Radio 4's 'From Our Own Correspondant' programme had a report from Reunion this week.
You can listen to the programme at: bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03brwqs.
The part about Reunion starts at 11'38" and lasts for about 5 minutes.
There's a year left to listen.

There's also a written article at: bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-24300017

Thanks for that.

Thanks for sharing that - wasn't a bad little article and now I'm craving Riz Sofé!

Surprisingly there is not much on this Website about Reunion Island. I was just browsing around the Internet and found information on Cordoba, Argentina and then noticed Reunion Island.  A couple of years ago I took a long voyage from Antarctica to Spain, stopping at several islands in the Atlantic, rarely visited. The experience was splendid.  Now, I want to go somewhere else and I guess that is why "Reunion Island" caught my attention. Especially because I do not know anything about it, where it is or why.  Are there some sources on the Internet to help me out.  I won't be living there, but might want to visit.  Thank you.

Hi George

There's not a lot of tourist info in English on the web about Réunion but you could start here:

See also on my own blog http://travelssmart.blogspot.com the sidebar 'Links in English' about Réunion, and my practical info page: http://travelssmart.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html.

I'm reunionese and speak English. so if I can be of any help!!!
do not hesitate!!

Christelle

Thanks to all of you reunion island is no longer the small rock lost in the indian ocean where people are not interesting as we don't speak English and where there is nothing to do for there is little tourist info on the Web!!
but there is still a lot to do and people from all over the world deserve to know more on this little rock which is my island... I'm not a tourist guide though i passed the exam a couple of years ago. I don't work at the tourist office.
just feeling sad (and a bit crossed) when reading that so many people want to call on us and they just don't get the info!!!

And as the saying goes "ti pa ti pa nou va arrivé!!!! "= tea pa tea pa new va areevei!!! (every little bit helps!!!)

many thanks,

Christelle

Hi Christelle,
I am interested in moving to Reuion with my family. I have never been there but feel very drawn to the Island. However I like the tropical climate best, some of my childhhod was spent in Malaysia. I do not know the towns but St Pierre looks like a lovely town. I would like to know more about the different towns and what would be a good place to buy a house for a family.
Kind regards
Julian

hi JC5,
Saint- Pierre is definitely the town where you could live a peaceful life with your family. Though I was born in saint-Paul, the largest district of reunion, Saint Pierre is peaceful (as it is the south in general!! )during the day but at nights ( particularly at the weekends) it's very lively. In fact, it's the liveliest of all!
The beach is safe (no sharks till now!!but never knows). It's scorching hot in summer but a light breeze blows it away from time to time.
Saint -Paul is interesting for its historical part and for the climate. If you go up the hills, it's cooler and more peaceful ... It's the countrylife with its many advantages. The most popular beaches stand there, in saint-gilles.
Saint denis is the county town : no beach, urban life, very hot ... but some advantages like a university, a great place ,Colarado, to have a walk, where children can have fun, get some fresh air, ...
Reunion island has many interesting places

all in all, I would say, it depends on what you're looking for...  and

oups!!

and how much money you have If you want to buy a house.
This is my point of view! It's a bit general.
If you need more accurate information, do not hesitate!!
i forgot to add that to me,  L'entre deux is also a great place to live!!

Christelle

hi again Julian,

i found 2 sites that may be of some interest :http://www.hillsofafrica.com/blog/a-look-into-the-towns-villages-and-creole-culture-of-reunion-island and http://www.worldatlas.com/webimage/coun … yWn6IXwspk

Hi Christelle,
I am sorry for taking so long to reply, my email address was hacked and hotmail prevent me from recieving and sending email. I have changed my email in settings so I should hopefully recieve replies now. Thank you for taking the time to reply to my questions it seems that people from Reunion are indeed friendly and helpful! The food and culture look great too! I would love very much to finally settle down somewhere like your Island! I thought St Peirre would be a good town and also St Paul looks very good in fact the whole Island is incredible! I guess it would be difficult to turn your head and not see something beautiful wherever you are on the Island and so I must look at practicalities. I will look up L'entre deux as you suggest!
I would be intersted to bring my business to the Island but this would have to be looked into with great detail.

Financially if we consolidated all our assets and without selling my business assets we would be able to achieve maybe 400 000 euros give or take. It would be preferable to buy a plot near the coast and build a house with a large workshop for my business. I understand that there is probably a lot involved in doing something like this. I own a property in France in the South West which we need to sell along with my house in London so it will all take time. As you can see my life is complicated
I will look up the links you suggested.
Again thanks for your advise it is very much appreciated!
Kind regards and best wishes
Julian

Hi Julian

Have you had a look at this Investor's Guide by Nexa Reunion? http://www.nexa.re/lagence-nexa/publica … -2013.html

Hi Catherine,
I have to confess that I think that I have read most of your posts as they are informative and I previously downloaded that document as a result, very helpful, many thanks.
