Big Increase in Tourism Budget

An ongoing topic here is whether Ecuadorians are getting fed up with all the furriners; a related theme is that the government may remove the welcome mat.

Here's an indication that the government (the people might be another matter) is not yet tired of us (or anyway, not yet tired enough to forego our money).

The government of Ecuador is slated to increase the country's annual tourism budget from $40 million to $150 million, Minister of Tourism Vinicio Alvarado announced last week during TravelMart Latin America, the leading regional tourism industry conference which was hosted in Quito.

In order to implement the policies needed for Ecuador to solidify its position as a regional tourism power, the Ecuador Ministry of Tourism is aiming to quadruple its resources. This budget will include funding for infrastructural developments such as roads, ports, and airports, which will exceed direct tourism investment.

Encouraging tourism is a different business from tolerating foreign migrant residents.

Tourists show up, spend a bunch of money, then leave.
They get to keep your money and then get rid of you.

Resident foreigners are a more difficult issue. Rolling out the welcome mat for temporary visitors is not akin to making residency permits any less harrowing.

That's great news. I wonder how many people here are starting or have tourism dependent businesses?
