Expenses in ghana

Hi,

I got job in ghana for 2000USD.I am from chennai.

What is the total expenses in ghana for a bachelor?

This offer is the good one for a bachelor?

You do not say whether this is the money you will get on top of accommodation, transport, medical cover, flights or if you have to pay for these yourself. If it is just spending money for food, utilities, entertainment it is a good salary for Ghana

Hi,

Thanks for your reply.

I have two questions regarding this. Please reply.

1)If i want to pay for accomodation, transport, medical cover, food, utilities and entertainment how much amount in usd that i want to spent in ghana for a month as a single person.
If my salary is 2000usd can i save 500usd monthly after my all above expenses?

2)If i spent only for food, utilities, entertainment how much amount can i save monthly if i got 2000usd?

It is very difficult to answer the first point because it all depends on where you live. You can easily spend $2000 on accommodation alone in some parts of Accra.
If you are only buying food etc then $2000 should give you a reasonable lifestyle and allow for savings.

Option 1 might take you into the red, meaning you will spend more than you make. You will live from paycheck to paycheck with no extra money to save. Option 2 if you plan carefully, for example eat at home often, make fewer phone call abroad, and use the local transportation, then you might save yourself some money. $500 a month savings is a stretch  Ghana seem cheap to live, but not at all in many ways. You can easily spend more than $100 a day without thinking much of it.

If you have to pay for transport, food, utilities (phone bills in particular), entertainment and without paying for accommodation and medical, you may still survive with a little of savings cos by then, probably you are on a meager diet, restrict yourself to a lonely after work life and stay miserably till end of every month to just send that pay packet home - Don't come to Ghana. There is no life in this kind of situation. Just imagine if you fall ill and need medication, hospitalization, attention and care ........, you will be in serious situation.

Accommodation can be very expensive in Ghana. If you company takes care of that, provide at least a simple lunch, medical, take the tab for the phone bills (communication related task)and you start learning to enjoy the local staples, your 2K can be stretched further.

BTW, whether you have the means or otherwise, Ghana local staples are very palatable and delicious.

Now, go talk to your employer regarding the terms again and if they refuse to pay for your accommodations, medical and at least lunch, you are better off in India.

Cheers

You should be able to get by quite comfortably given the conditions accorded you. Under any normal circumstances, you should be able to save some monies too if not too substantial.

Regarding your 2nd question, it is quite subjective.

Reasons being:

Your bachelorhood's lifestyle,
Your commitment in funds repatriation to your home town and most importantly, how long are you able to maintain "bachelorhood" status.

Good luck and hope you would come to love Ghana as you would your hometown.

Cheers

thank  u so much

My pleasure. Cheers

Hi Partha Sarathi / Bhuvanesh Rajasekarn / Giri,
This is Balamurugan came from Chennai, presently am in Accra, Ghana

In African country based on companies there 2 salaries given to the employees,

1. first one is for Local expenses, normally companies will provide accommodation, transportation, medical and  rest of expenses you need to take in care. ( Like food , communication, entertainment, and your personal requirements)

for a average person can cover with 300 to 400USD for food and rest of other incidental expenses.

2. the second one is like savings @ in your home town, it will be directly deposited in your hometown bank account.

Regards,
Balamurugan. P

Thank you very much

DEAR SIR OR MADAM

MY COMPANY WILL PAY FOR ACCOMADATION,HEALTH INSURANCE AND OTHERS AND OFFER ME 4000 USD IN A MOTHN

If they are paying for all that, then $4000 is a sweet deal. Go for it!

DEAR RUSKIN,

THEY OFFER ME A HOUSE IN JAWOOLO AREA, IS IT GOOD LOCATION AND IS IT CLOSE TO AIRPORT RESIDENTIAL AREA?
ANY DISADVANTAGE ABOUT THIS AREA??

DEAR MADAM,

I WILL BE COMING TO ACCRAA FROM TURKEY TO WORK.
FIRST 6 MONTH WILL BE TRAINING SESSION AND THEN IF ALL GOES WELL I WILL BRING MY FAMILY.
THEY OFFER ME HOUSE IN JAWOOLO, IS IT GOOD AREA?

The proper spelling of the name is Dzorwulu. It is a nice area to live and not far at all from the airport. I am very sure you will like Dzorwulu.

Dear Friends,

I have got a job offer from an indian company in Accra, Ghana for the position of Manager.

The company is offering me a salary of 1500 USD per month. Apart from this the company is providing Accommodation, Official Transport and Medical(as per company policy). The company is giving me Ghanian Cedi - 900 per month for living expenses (food, communication and other personal expenses.

Now my queries are:
1. Is it a good deal.

2. Is Ghanian Cedi - 900 per month is enough to take care of my food, communication expenses, if I live a normal average life style. Is there any possibility of saving in this.

3. There is no mention of utilities bill (like electricity and water), then who will pay for this, COMPANY OR ME

4. I have heard that there is a electricity problem in Ghana and the climate is too hot. Can anyone please clarify on this because life will be tough if this the problem.

Regards
Praphull jha

With regard to the utilities etc., that will have to be negotiated with the company.
900 cedis is enough for food and personal expenses but probably not enough if you have to pay for electricity, water, cleaning, DSTV and like eating out and socialising.
Yes, Ghana is hot and electricity supply is not stable. Usually accommodation comes with some form of backup power supply so find out about that too.

Hi, Nice to meet you all

This forum is very useful happy to be here,

Dear all Please I need some advices, I ll be soon in Ghana - Accra for a 3 years contract with my actual company, all operational expenses will be  be borne by my employer, Accommodation, operational car with driver to move around the cities, communication etc... except for food and other personal expenses I will get a 400-500$  allowance per month for that, is it sufficient if I manage it well ? let's say if i eat at home on week days and hang out the week end ?
Thank you very much in advance

Please refer to my previous answer as $400-500 is around 900 cedis.

Thank you very much for your kind reply
I am getting a lot of information about Ghana through this forum.. I hope i ll be able to get a new experience during my stay in there...especially my job will require me to move a lot around the country and meet the local retailers and people in the markets :) and seems more expat are getting in :)

It depends on where you live in Accra and your life style. A confortable house with shower room and toilet for yourself alone; plus medical expenses, transport and food, I think it is not enough. A decent home is quite expensive in Ghana.

Please read his post, accommodation is provided, the money quoted was only for expenses.

hi there

can some one please help me i got a job offer $1000+accommodation+Car+Utility

i got 2 children and my wife is this offer good enough to live in accra i decent live

Depends on your life style. You don't mention the ages of your children or if their education is included. Your $1000 certainly wouldn't stretch to that. I think you might find it difficult to manage if you eat out a lot and also want to go out on a regular basis.

my children's are only son 3 years daughter 18 months
not schooling for now
just the grocery and may family out on weekends.

what you suggest.

Does the package cover medical? That is very important with children. What sort of food do you normally eat? Ghanaian food is OK but if you eat a lot of meat and European type food you will find food expensive. What about internet, phone, TV? as you will be spending around $150 on those. If you can manage on $1000 for your monthly expenses in Durban, then youu can probably manage her

yes can do manage here in durban easily.

for my food mostly indian food.thanks for your help much appreciated.

one more thing am i allow to use me south african driving license to drive in Ghana or do i have to convert it if yes would you be able to advise me procedure of it.

Ok, but please make sure your contract covers medical. You will need to get a Ghanaian one once you are here.

thanks again for your kind help

Morning Hkann
how are you?

I have just finished a first interview with an educational institution in Kumasi, Ghana.

The salary package is still being discussed but I believe it will be something around $2500/month + resettlement package.

I'm a single male but am hoping to save enough to travel on holidays and also send some money home for student loans.

Is this enough for this city?

Also, what is there to do in and around Kumasi? It seems like a very industrial area from what I have been gathering.

Thanks in advance.

You don't say what the $2500 is covering. First let me say it is far more than any Ghanaian teacher would get. Even if you are paying for accommodation, utilities, travel, medical, it should be enough to live on and live a decent lifestyle but not sure about your loans.
Kumasi is in the centre of Ghana and I wouldn't describe it as industrial. It is greener than Accra.

I was basing my observation about Kumasi on the photos that have been posted for Kumasi, although I do see that it has a large lake to enjoy time at and not the fast undercurrent water of Accra beaches. It's great to know. I miss seeing green.

Currently I do not know if they will offer $2500 + extras in the package or if the package will be that salary + housing allowance + resettlement package.

I'm waiting to hear their offer. When I made the offer I didn't specifically mention medical or transportation but did mention housing.

Here in Turkey I was unable to pay loans with the salary vs. cost of living here which I'm hoping to change so I can eventually have them paid off. Most likely I'll be sending $3-400/month home to the USA.

Honestly, I've never been 'asked' what my salary expectation was except when I took a position as a Business Development Assistant for a lawfirm here. However, I was able to come up with a fair estimate since I know the cost of living here in Istanbul.  Teaching salaries vary highly around the world.
