How I got robbed in Nairobi

I lost my wallet today in a matatu (private bus) in Nairobi and I would like to alert others about the clever strategy of the thief. A young man sitting behind me asked me if I could see the coins he had just dropped. I felt the need to be helpful and picked up his coins from my seat. I guess they did not succeed in taking the wallet at first try because after a while he asked me if I could see some more. I believe the other man sitting next to me took my wallet when I was looking for the coins for the second time. He took my wallet from my bag which was in my lap. I guess the lesson is that one should not allow anyone to distract one's attention from one's own belongings. Luckily I was carrying very little money.

Re: How I got robbed in Nairobi

Sorry to hear that you have been robbed at Nairobbery !!

"You know you are in Kenya when you have to to your pockets everytime you come out of a matatu"

Matatu is the best place to snap your wallet and phone...

Re: How I got robbed in Nairobi

Lots of ways they can pickpocket you...

1)if the matatu is full and you have to go to the backrow, a thief can sit on the edge of his seat so he is taking up most of the aisle. As you try to squeeze through, you do not notice him take something from your pocket.

2) A thief might tell you there is a police check point ahead and you must put on your seat belt. As you try to find one down the side of your seat, they take something from you.

Best advice. Put your belongings in a zippable bag and sit with this in both your hands on your lap. Never let your attention be distracted so that you take your eyes off it.
