My wife and I are planning our first trip to Costa Rica. Our main objective is to get in some down time from our jobs and just relax on a beach. After looking at both coasts, we've decided to try Tamarindo, on the Pacific side. We will take a few day trips toward the interior from there. Any suggestions on where to go to get a feel for CR away from the major tourist areas would be appreciaed. If all goes well, we will be back for a more in depth, due diligence trip to see if it is where we would like to retire.

Thanks for the suggestion, but tearing up the country in an off road vehicle is not our style. We're more laid back. We'd like to explore small towns and villages and experience CR from the perspective of "would this be a place where we could see ourselves living at some point".
