Credit checks.

Hi All,

I am thinking of immigrating to Vancouver from the UK and need some answers about Credit checks. My credit rating is poor in the UK, although don't have any real debts to speak of. However, I am unable to get any credit and had to have a guarantor for our rented property. How will this affect me in BC for rental properties, mobile phone contracts, and bank accounts?

Thanks
Paul

Re: Credit checks.

You'll be entering Canada as if you have no credit at all. You will need to provide a deposit down when renting, and will probably need a reference or two from previous land lords.. As far as the mobile phone, you can always just get a pay as you go contract deal. I would suggest Wind as you don't have to sign a contract with them, and her pay per month..

Scratch that.. I just tracked back and saw you were moving to BC... Good choice, but it is a bit expensive as alot of expats are moving there.. Either way, its beautiful, and you'll have a great time wheil you're out there! I would suggest looking at Calgary, Alberta as well, as it wont be as expesnive, and you're still right at the foot of the Rockies.

Cheers!

Re: Credit checks.

hi paul,

the two main credit bureaus in canada are transunion and equifax. not sure if you can contact them directly and inquire how newcomers build their credit score; i think you can get a pre-paid credit card and use that, then switch to a regular credit card and start to develop your credit rating. this article may help: http://www.ehow.com/how_5006974_establi … anada.html

also, try and speak to a branch of one of the big five cdn banks in your city and inquire if they offer the above type of credit card so you can establish credit: royal bank ("rbc"), toronto dominion ("td bank"), bank of montreal ("BMO"), canadian imperial bank of commerce ("CIBC") and bank of nova scotia ("Scotiabank") there's also banks like HSBC that operate in canada.

i would suggest that you try and stay away from "high risk lenders" ie: financial institutions that are not licensed as banks, as this may tarnish your credit worthiness without you knowing it.

hope that helps,
