Traveling in Jan, can use all the help i can get!

Hello all! I am moving to Sydney in Jan 2010 with a year long work permit. I am soooo excited but also like to get as much information as I can before I go about what to expect. Prior to going, I am going to try and find a flat-mate or someone who has extra space to rent, but where is a good area to look? Or a good way to find people looking? I know about gumtree but where else would be beneficial??
