Suitable car for Nairobi

I'm in the market for a car and wondering what kind would make sense in Nairobi. A Four-wheel drive is great to drive out of town but would it be a target for car-jackers and thieves in the city? I've heard that japanese saloons are often stolen but what if I deliberately buy an old battered car? As I see it there are pros and cons for both and welcome feedback on a good choice of car.
