What is the difference between a French residence visa and a Schengen visa?

Hi,

The difference is very simple and can be briefed as follows:
France Residence Visa: is a long term residence permit where in you get the legal authority to stay in France for a longer period of time. to apply for this you have to apply the local France administrative

France Schengen Visa: is the Short term visa to visit the Various Schengen countries on a single visa being your first destination or maximum stay period in France. It is valid for 90 days. this single visa can be used to visit several Schengen countries.
