Shipping household goods

I am retiring this year and I'm looking at Belize as a possible site.  I will be making an exploratory trip in May and plan to make the final move in October.  During my 46 years of government service, I have lived all over the world including a lot of time in Central America, but in the past, the government has always moved me. So here is my question: on the average, is it cheaper to ship household goods or is it cheaper to buy locally?  Keep in mind, that I will have QRP status and that makes a big difference in duties paid on the imported goods.  Any info from the retired class or other knowledgeable participants is welcomed.  Thanks in advance.  BTW: I should probably add that I will be looking in the Belmopan area for a place to live. That might affect the shipping rates.
