Renting/Leasing in Sydney, Australia

Hi I'm Dan,

My girlfriend & I are moving from Christchurch, New Zealand to Sydney, Australia on 23rd August 2009.

As far as we can grasp life in NZ & AUS is quite similar in most ways.

I am just wondering if anyone can recommend any safe areas or suburbs which would be good for young couple (+ 1 maltese) to live in & what the process is like in getting an apartment in Sydney. Based on looking at a few real estate sites something around $320 p/week ($AUS) for 1 Bedroom apartment would be suitable.

Any & all advice in regards to leasing/renting accommodation in Sydney would be appreciated.
