Buying property in Jamaica

Hi,

can a foreigner buy property in Jamaica?

If so, is it complicated? What is the process of purchasing a property in Jamaica?

Any tips for buying property, such as a check-list of items to verify ?

Thanks in advance for participating!

Christine

Hi,

Yes, a foreigner can buy property in Jamaica.

Whether it is complicated or not is very relative. It is no more difficult to buying a house in the UK. The first step is to find a realtor/estate agent and then find some properties on the MLS, within your budget, that you wish to view. The realtor will be able to guide you through each step.

Having a UTN (tax number) makes the process easier. Your realtor will be able to produce a checklist for you.

I highly recommend Dee from KellerWilliams her number is 001 876 778 9009

I bought my apartment in Ocho Rios last year. Took over 6 months. Same as buying in UK. You need a good Jamaican solicitor once you have put in your offer and a bank account. To make it easier I opened a Victoria Mutual account in London which works well as I use it here. Solicitor will advise you every step of the way.
Good luck.

Did you use VMBS for a mortgage, JN perhaps or buy using money from the U.K.?

I am trying to weigh up my options. 8-9% for a mortgage is very steep for a secure loan. Especially when compared to a mortgage in the U.K. at 2-3%.

I paid cash. Mortgages do have a high repayment. See about loan in UK.
