Have six weeks to see Ethiopia, want to rent apartment in Addis, etc.
Greetings. I have just arrived in Addis and want to explore the country, with a base here.
I have six weeks (until the first week of January). I would appreciate any help with the following:
I have found this site. Now I need to find places where I can meet other expats, and locals who speak good English.
My idea is to rent an apartment. I am usually a budget traveler, but at this point I will need something nice: Secure, furnished, with a kitchen having at least the basics (stove, refrigerator, pots, dishes and utensils); in a quiet place, plenty of sunlight; probably near one of the universities.
Judging by comparison with Thailand, where I live and have a 70 square meter apartment (although unfurnished) in what is essentially a two-star hotel for 5000 baht per month
(about $165), and considering that Ethiopian prices are much lower as far as daily living goes, I would expect to be able to find something comparable for no more than the same price. However, I realize that in the world of economics one thing that is never lacking is surprises, both pleasant and unpleasant, and I am of course also aware of the double pricing system, which hits you as soon as you get off the plane. And as always, there could be other costs, requirements, and booby-traps. So I am prepared for a bit of work. You may know of something that would suit, or perhaps of a reputable real estate agent.
I also am considering renting a small motorcycle---what we would call a scooter in America---like for instance the Honda Click I drive at home in Chiang Mai; but I have only a Thai driver's license, and if renting is feasible, I will probably need to hunt down a local agent of the International Driving Permit Association.
Next, I may decide to hire a tour guide to show me around Addis, and it will definitely not be a taxi driver!
And lastly, I wonder if I could find an expat computer guru here, or a native teacher in a local school whose English is excellent, who understands Android and could give me private
lessons. My laptop was stolen a couple weeks ago; I went out and bought a tablet. I didn't bring it with me---left it with a friend in Egypt---because I can't get to first base on
it. But what I do have with me is an Android cell phone---a Samsung Galaxy S-II, and it is this new Android system that I need coaching in specifically.
I don't have a sim card yet; I will post my phone number when I do get it.
Many thanks in advance.
