I am an expatriate.

I am American, and I am now living in Germany. I am currently in Berlin.

About me

In October of '07, I left California for a 4 month backpacking trip of Europe with a friend of mine. Two months later, tired of the cold and the backpacker lifestyle, my friend returned home. Over one year later, I was still in Europe, living as an Expat in Berlin. It was a beautiful, spontaneous accident - you know the kind - absolutely life-changing.

Call it what you will - a spontaneous decision, a way to escape the normality of ordinary life, running away from debt collectors, a grievous error - one day I woke up and I was an expat.

I've just returned home to California after living abroad for over a year, and now I'm trying to re-acclimate myself into the culture I grew up in, which is proving difficult at best. After living in Berlin for almost a year, I am spoiled! Who knew that life could be sooo good? But California is great too, and I'm learning how to enjoy it again. Thankfully, the story continues - I have a ticket back to Berlin in April of '09.

I believe in living every day like it's your last. I believe in spontaneity, long-nights, good conversation, wonderful friends, wine and coffee and the European way. My life is constantly changing - I'd be honored if you'd follow it:  http://jessinberlin.blogspot.com

Call it what you will - a spontaneous decision, a way to escape the normality of ordinary life, running away from debt collectors, a grievous error - I somehow found myself a resident of Berlin in November of '08. The girl I left California with returned home shortly after; I stuck around for over a year - many thanks to the Berlin Couchsurfing community. I've just recently returned home to California and I'm trying to acclimate myself back to the life I once knew. Culture shock, anyone? Multiple friends have told me the Sacramento suburbs ARE NOT Berlin - but it doesn't stop me from trying! I have a ticket back to Berlin in April, and although I love California and am trying hard to enjoy my life here, I'm counting down the days until I'm on that plane, headin' back to the motherland.
