Living in Yanbu

Hi all.  I just wanted to post that we are currently living in Yanbu.  We are about 4 hours north of Jeddah.
For anyone thinking of moving or already in the process of moving to Yanbu, feel free to contact me with any questions.
I've spent a little time in Jeddah too.

I have two girls (5 and under).  :)  Books are the big ones.  Then some toys, and room decor to make it feel a little more "home."  I'm actually excited to get rid of a bunch of stuff too.  Are you going to be in a compound?  Which city are you headed to?
I just told my husband to make sure he has a computer all set up for me and an Iphone and Ipad ready to go!  LOL

Thanks so much! Funny, I had read that posting a few days ago!  :)  So, perhaps I know more than I thought! LOL  Would love to hear more once you get there!
Have you figured out what you're bringing with you?

Western Women in Saudi

Okay, so I'm having little luck finding some answers.  I want to know all the rules I need to follow while living in Saudi.  I'm and American.
Here's what I already know:
I have to wear an abaya in public
No driving
Don't talk to men unless for business (buying food/clothes)
No displays of public affection

I'm getting mixed reviews about the driver thing though...am I allowed to hire a driver to take me (and my children) to the stores, shopping, school, etc?  Some say I can't be in the car with anyone but my husband (but he works!) Others say you can have a driver at your disposal.  Who's right??

What else do I need to know?  I want to make sure I don't make any mistakes and tick off the religious police (or anyone else for that matter)  What about etiquette when out and about?
Thanks!

Thank you both for replying.  One question I have is...is there anything for me (as a woman) to do aside from the mall and restaurants?  Are there workout facilities for women?
What about my little girls, are there activities for them to get involved in (gymnastics, music lessons, etc?)
People here in the states are so uneducated when it comes to life in Saudi and the hardest part for me is moving to a place I know so very little about.  It's scary.  I'm excited at times and nervous as all hell the next.
Am I allowed to bring books with me from the states?  (fictional books that i love to read)  or is the content monitored?  What else will I be required to leave here?
Thanks for any help with all my questions!  :)

Possibly moving to Yanbu

Hi all.  My husband has been offered a job with Parsons in Yanbu.  As of now, we wouldn't be living in a compound, but in the Royal Commission in a neighborhood.  That part there worries me.  We have two little girls (both under the age of 5).  I'm concerned about safety.

And in general, I'd just like to know a little about what daily life would be like.  (and I already know all about "women can't do anything")  I want to know from those of you living there.  I respect the Saudi life and I'm not worried about following the rules.

I want to know if we are making a good choice in this major move.  We've been looking at it like a great adventure.

Any advice, tips, etc. would be welcome.  As well as info about what I can and can't bring from my own home.  (we live in California)

Thanks!
