My name's Adam. I am an American "ex-patriate in training" currently living and working in Indianapolis, Indiana. For the past few years, I have strongly considered earning my TESL/TESOL/EFL/ESL certificate in an effort to land an English teaching job in a foreign country. I also plan on working toward a MA degree in German/Germanic Languages and eventually a PhD in the same. I have started to weigh my options as far as what countries I would like to teach in and the benefits of each location. Utilizing several teach abroad websites as well as the resources found on the US Department of State website, I am narrowing my options down but not restricting them based on extremely strict criteria. One of the most important filters I am using to narrow down my options is the issue of safety and security. There are a few countries I plan on avoiding due to the my perception that they are not Westerner-friendly or simply not American-friendly. I plan on avoiding places where I would more than likely be targeted on the basis of my nationality or appearance. I hate to inconvenience anyone, and therefore I have made myself adaptable. I have no qualms whatsoever about learning another language or observing certain religious customs. All I ask for is patience. IF (emphatically) I were to earn my certification and interviewed successfully with a teaching abroad firm, I would try living abroad for one contract length first and then return home to ponder my next move. My hope is that I will enjoy it and would do it again in another country. Who knows? Maybe I'll like it so much that I would find a new home away from home, so to speak. Simply put, life is too short to spend it all in one place. All I want to do is see the world; meet new people, learn new things, and live a life that I could easily write a volume of books about one day.
