I'm a wandering ronin in red. I started off with an undying love for Japan, floated over to China and was enticed by Beijing and later Shanghai. I worked as a translator and interpreter for Japanese and Mandarin, and in my free time I roamed Asia and discovered more about what it means to live abroad and without limitations. I now work for the Japan National Board of Tourism promoting the beautiful country that is Nippon.
I joined expat.com on 01 July 2014.
I bought a one way ticket to Shanghai and still don't regret it. Within two weeks I was able to find a job as a business consultant working on Japanese projects. Later on I joined Shanghai International Studies University to study consecutive interpreting for Mandarin, and finally I spent one year at ADK advertising as an interpreter/translator for Japanese/Chinese/English.
Shanghai is the ultimate city for nightlife, international friends and good food. My best years were in Shanghai, as well as some of my best friends.
Again, pollution.
First time to live in China and I adored every second of it (despite the horrendous pollution and traffic). Broke down and sobbed about my terrible Mandarin, but fought back the tears twice fold in determination and emerged fluent after 6 month of study.
Completely opposite of Japan. Anything goes. No manners. Complete and utter liberation and the ability to speak your mind without using polite lies.
Pollution and traffic
Learn about Japanese culture, perfect my Japanese, visit as many places in Japan as possible and most of all to become a role model and mentor to my students
The inaka of all inakas. One 7-11 and nothing else. I was the lone foreigner and, later on, a truly valuable part of the community.
Quite rural.
I am originally from a middle-of-nowhere town in Utah. I studied Japanese and Mass Communication at the University of Utah.
